The easy part is done. Next step: Core overhaul

I would trade kessel jvr gardiner and whatever else they wanted.

But this is pointless. Whoever drafts him isn't trading him.

I hope Shanahan is already putting a plan in place to start the overhaul.  Probably little or nothing will happen until the deadline, but as Cox pointed out in his column today, Shanahan had the good sense to fire Carlyle while the team was still nominally in the hunt for a playoff spot.  He knew a pipe dream when he saw it.

Unfortunately that pipe dream has just gotten smokier.

Because Kessel has been getting so much criticism from the traditional media, I decided to look up Clarkson on Google News.  Kessel makes $2.75 million on the cap more than Clarkson, so you'd expect there to be some difference in their respective production.

Kessel - on pace for 78 points
Clarkson - on pace for 24 points

Okay, so there's a difference of 54 points.  That's about the production you'd expect from a very good 2nd liner - 50-55 points.

If you look up Kessel's name on Google News you get:

Is Maple Leafs' Phil Kessel a coach-killer?
Toronto Sun-Jan 6, 2015

Kelly: Trading Phil Kessel is the key to overdue rebuild of Maple Leafs
The Globe and Mail - ‎Jan 6, 2015‎

If you look up Clarkson you get:

David Clarkson changing roles for Maple Leafs
Toronto Sun-Jan 3, 2015
- which starts out: Winger David Clarkson, whose production is ahead of last season (he'd finish with 6 more points than last season at his current pace if he played same # of games as last season)

And that's it.  I guess those intangibles are worth more than 54 points.

It really sucks and makes me have zero respect for almost every beat reporter in Toronto, the fact that they are not screaming this at every opportunity means they are all bought and paid for.

I suppose we should learn to expect the same sycophantic bs from the sports media that the mainstream media has become where you parrot whatever your corporate masters want you to.

The sad thing is, I think a lot of people buy into it.  I don't think Twitter is a good representation (it's an echo chamber a lot of the time) of Leafs fans.

Kessel's name is clickbait because he is enigmatic and polarizing (personality vs performance). Like Kadri's used to be when he was yo-yoed. Phanuef's too, based on his captaincy.

Clarkson doesn't do anything so he's not interesting. The only point of contention with Clarkson really is the unmoveable contract Nonis awarded him, as his performance is exactly what we the fans expected of him.

Sadly true.  Although you'd think...

Of course, whether or not people criticize Clarkson has nothing at all to do with the validity of criticism of Kessel, Phaneuf, or any other player.

Well that would entirely depend on what the criticism is and that would have to be looked at on a case by case basis.

Nope.

If you are a media member (to pick an example) and you're criticizing Kessel as the Leafs unable to win because of Kessel and you don't include Clarkson in there, then yes one has to do with the other.  It goes to your credibility and ability to accurately assess what's right or wrong with the team.

That's not the point I was making, though.  You are criticizing a third party's character, and I'm talking about the inherent validity of criticism of a particular player, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the validity of criticism of another player.
