The easy part is done. Next step: Core overhaul

Is there any speculation about what Shanahan will say at noon?

There's no announcement or anything like that. He'll likely just make general statements about the direction of the franchise and then take questions from the media.

Seems a bit odd after Nonis already spoke about the Carlyle firing, but ok.

I'm wondering if Nonis is gone, though that probably wouldn't be announced in a press conference, right?

Not necessarily, Nonis could be gone. If they moved the coach they may want to change other parts of the culture now. Why wait, if they plan to drop him anyway?

We'd hear about it before the actual press conference, yeah.

This is pretty much just because the media has complained about now seeing Shanny in awhile. So the Leafs just want to shut them up about that.

Yeah, seems like it's just a big waste of time.

Not about Nonis it seems.

These types of things are never about big news. That always gets out beforehand, because the media gets alerted about it well before the team addresses them. Whenever there's a press conference/availability without news having already dropped, it's really just a State of the Union/Q & A session. The team isn't going to drop a bomb at a press conference. They're almost entirely explanatory rather than newsworthy.

So he spoke to them (the players) and basically said "Show us you belong here or you're gone".

He didn't come right out and say it, but that's what it seems like to me.

No questions about coachability of players?  I guess not worth it when you don't have the chance to stir something up.

@draglikepull

Shanahan has fired & replaced virtually the entire Leafs front office over the past several months and there were ZERO questions about that

Question: How many other teams have a President (Lowe comes to mind) and how many Presidents would have their own press conference?

From what I can tell, these are the current people in the position of President of Hockey Operations:

Cam Neely in Boston, Burke in Calgary, John Davidson in Columbus, Lowe in Edmonton, Paul Holmgren in Philly, Linden in Vancouver, and of course Shanny.

The above are the teams with a President and a GM. Some teams have a GM who also holds the President title.

Sakic in Colorado?

To me it seems firing Carlyle was, in part, a public shaming for the team. I wouldn't at all be surprised if that message was driven home with a remark like that from on high.

At this point the core of a future contending team is Rielly, Kadri and Bernier. Maybe Gardiner if he can get his head screwed on straight.

Prime time sports today at 5 was hilarious. Download it later tonight for laugh.

The highlight being that kessel is untradeable.

A 45 minute leafs bashing, which in of itself is fine, but not 1 mention of clarkson. Not 1.

Bottom line, blow up the team. But you can't because the entire team is unmoveable.

I'm not 100% sure Kessel's issues of being afraid of the corners, afraid of getting hit, and afraid of battling are on Bozak.

I'm 100% sure those issues are massively overstated. I've seen him do all of those things as recently as the Leafs game against Washington. He may not excel at them, but, he's not "afraid" to do them, like some people like to believe. Also, what's the sense in going into the corners, battling for pucks and taking hits when your line mates - and especially your centre - aren't willing to? You're not actually going to accomplish anything other than getting caught behind the play.

The bottom line is, they are issues. Regardless of who his centre is.

I'm not even talking about going after an opposing player with the puck. I'm talking about being the first man on the puck and not slowing to then swing your stick half heartedly at a puck that's 5 feet away.

You guys talk about possession non stop. Well here we have a guy with the best set of wheels on the team and the ability to change the game for the good yet the second there's a chance that there'll be any sort of a confrontation he immediately stops moving his feet, sticks his head in his shell and flails at the puck. That's a serious problem when you are trying to get possession of a loose puck.
