The Habs Thread - Reloaded

so, Cammy, a depth goalie and a late round pick for Bourque, a marginal/run of the mill prospect and a 2nd next year (probably an early 2nd considering Calgary's recent play). Lose-lose?

well i guess montreal is slightly more french now

Isn't Bourque from out west?

he is ..but he's described on his wikipedia as "franco-albertan"

Also says he is fluent in French and that he is Metis.

Also, it's wikipedia.

Yep, but any semi-intelligent person knows to take it with at least a grain of salt.

Have to believe something else is going to happen on the Flames' end - they don't have the cap space to make this move, unless there's a season ending injury to someone earning $3M+.

I'm laughing my head off. Seems like Gauthier was all upset with Cammalleri's comments and traded him to the first team to ask. Surely he could have let GMs know he was available to try and get a better package.

Realistically how much better were they going to be able to do? Cammalleri is almost 30, has seen his production decline the last three years(and hasn't managed to play in 70 games in those seasons) and is owed 14 million dollars in the next two seasons(6 million cap hit).

I remember reading more than a few posts lamenting how Burke traded for Kessel instead of signing Cammalleri. At the time I guess it was a legitimate argument, but it certainly seems silly now.

I was surprised to find that Bourque is 30 already. A 2nd is good, but Cammalleri is one of their better assets.

Bourque has quesitonable production this year, and injury concerns. I think they might've done better at the deadline, but maybe not.

Cammalleri has just as, if not more, significant injury concerns as Bourque. On top of that, as pointed out, he's under contract for 2 more season with a real payout of $14M and a cap hit of $6M for each, while he's seen declining production - and, outside of 2 very good seasons, that production hasn't been much to write home about. If he was one of Montreal's better assets, then they're in much worse shape than most of us are giving them credit for.

Bourque's production over the past couple seasons has been very similar to Cammalleri's, at roughly half the cost and he provides more physical play.

Except, of course, that the Leafs would also have Seguin, Hamilton and...zzzzzz

Bourque is Metis...half native/half french and speaks french fluently

From Bourque himself:

?I might be in trouble too, I don?t speak French and probably have the most French name on that team,? Bourque joked. ?I know a few words, but that?s just from school.?

In a media conference after the trade, Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier suggested the motivation behind the trade wasn't Cammalleri's recent comments, but instead a desire to get bigger up front.

"One of the reasons that it would improve the club is that we need to score harder goals, we need to score the goals that are not the fancy ones and are not the outside shots. The outside shots don't go in anymore. It's the second chances, the third chances, the rebounds, the screen shots, the tip ins and the stats show it very clearly," said Gauthier.

"That's why Mr. Bourque is a very attractive player to us because he scores most of his goals from those areas," he added.

Canny.  Very canny.
