The Habs Thread - Reloaded

We'll have to agree to disagree here, Busta. Maybe (maybe) Bourque is the "safer" player but I'm 100% convinced Cammalleri is the better one.

I'll freely admit Cammalleri is the more talented player. As for better, he certainly hasn't been since leaving the Flames. Bourque is definitely the more physical player and a marginally better defensive player.

I would have figured they could do better than basically a bigger version of Cammalleri who's slighty older and doesn't have the recent playoff performances.

Well, they did do a little better than just that. Not a ton but they did swap a 5th for a 2nd(and right now a Calgary 2nd, even in 2013, seems like it could be pretty valuable).

But still, my point was just that considering the almost certain issues Cammalleri's continued presence was going to cause that realistically they wouldn't do a whole lot better. I just don't see it. Could they have squeezed and extra mid-tier prospect or something out of it? Maybe. But nobody's going to trade a ton for a guy in Cammalleri's shoes even before you get into the realities of his contract.

I mean, think of it this way, the Leafs are a team with an enormous capacity to spend money on their team so spending to the cap/the difference between his cap hit and actual pay are irrelevant and, if I were running the Leafs, I wouldn't take him for free at this point. Cap space is too valuable an asset to spend 6 million of it on a guy with Cammelleri's issues of injury and decline.

So could they have done better? Maybe a bit. I just doubt it's to the extent that makes this the wrong move.

Shots are 10-8 Caps in the Habs game, and the score is 3-0 Washington.

If the Panthers earn a point, that'll put the Habs 10 points out of a playoff spot (assuming the Caps don't blow it). Officially in the "out of the playoff hunt" territory, as far as I'm concerned.

Jacques Martin and JFJ were on TSN's list.

Failed coach + excitable broadcaster = GM of the second biggest hockey team on the planet....yeah seems like a formula for success. McGuire? Seriously? If being an annoying hockey nerd can land you that position then all of us might as well apply...

Best coach for the Habs:  Guy Boucher  --  speaks French (IS French), would incorporate a more defensive system for the team (something not currently happening well with the Lightning, since Tampa Bay is an offensive-oriented squad), etc.

Best coach for the Lightning:  Randy Cunneyworth -- no need for the French language, can incorporate a good defensive system for the Lightning which will complement their offence, far less pressure to deal with (no Montreal media), etc.

The idea of trading places?  Exactly.  It's been done before...

It?s not as though trading a coach hasn?t happened before. You?ll recall back in 1987, the Quebec Nordiques received a first round pick and $75,000 as compensation for the New York Rangers hiring Michel Bergeron. And in the NFL, the Oakland Raiders received four draft picks and $8 million dollars from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Jon Gruden.

..the Canadiens would get a coach in Boucher who would not only fill the French-language requirement, but would also be familiar with the organization, since he led the Canadiens? American League affiliate in Hamilton to a conference final in 2010 before being scooped up by the Lightning.

Tampa, meanwhile, would get a coach who has a solid reputation and would likely have some success under less suffocating circumstances.

would kind make montreal look pretty stupid for not locking up the guy the first time around

Subban hasn't seen the ice since the end of the 1st. Cunneyworth is not happy with him, and hasn't been for some time, it seems.

He has the talent to be really good in this league but man, if he was Russian, there would be a comment about running back to the KHL every 30 seconds.  I love the anti-North American mentality that happens with lazy/arrogant players who think they are above the game.

He's an immature kid who got idolized too fast (and too much).  I hope he grows out of it because he could have a very good career.

On the former Leaf side.  Kaberle has 13 points in 20 games and is a +3 in Montreal since the trade.

Yeah. I think the best thing for him would be to be traded away from Montreal to a smaller market where he wouldn't get the same type of following.

Man, the Habs are beating up the Wings tonight. 6-0, and it's not even halfway through the 2nd.

Does a "jynx" count if they're in separate threads?

Speaking of jinxes, it was hilarious last night.  When the 3rd period started, Gord Miller starting to mention Price was looking for a shutout, then went on to say that last week he received alot of email from angry Leafs fans saying he "jinxed" Gustavsson's shutout bid by mentioning it on air.  He then went on to explain that Price could not hear him, and that he, Gord Miller had no effect on whether or not he gets a shutout.  Exactly 5 seconds after saying this, Detroit broke the shutout.  They both started laughing in the booth, and I was rolling with laughter.  :D

Yeah, I caught the audio last night in the car... It couldn't have been scripted any better. It was really, really, funny.
