The Habs Thread - Reloaded

mirtle: Claude Loiselle tells @mbrownSN590 during intermission here that he interviewed for Habs GM job and found out today it was a no.

Good. The Leafs will be happy to keep him.

All I read on the Habs boards is how Pierre McGuire would be such a great GM.  He's the #1 candidate amongst the fans.  I'm completely dumbfounded.  I don't think I'd even be able to watch them if they hired that freakshow.

First people were suggesting him as coach, which was bad enough, now it's GM.  I can't even believe this.

The Habs interviewed him for the job too.

What, the fact that he hasn't been part of an NHL head office since 1996 (despite frequently being touted as a candidate) and his record as a head coach at any level has been less than great doesn't impress you?

BREAKING: Sportsnet's Louis Jean reporting on Brady & Lang that the Montreal Canadiens will be buying out Scott Gomez's contract.

Greg Brady ‏ @bradyfan590

Per Capgeek, the Gomez buyout will sting the Habs on the salary cap for: 12/13 is 3.5M, for 13/14, 4.5M, then each year after it's 1.7M...

Funny you should mention it...

Bergevin and McGuire down to the wire. Habs choose Bergevin. Good hockey man, great sense of humour. Should be a great fit.

Scott Gomez buyout from CapGeek.com
2012-13: $3,523,810
2013-14: $4,523,810
2014-15: $1,666,667
2015-16: $1,666,667

I guess all things considered that isn't too bad given the hit they would take WITH him on the team for the next 2 years if they kept him.

It boggles my mind how he managed to even get on the rough list of candidates for these jobs.  He must be a good interviewer. All talk.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just send him to the minors?  That way there's $0 on the cap.

Some comments on Twitter that the buyout stuff may not be reliable, as they can't do it until 6/15 so it would be strange Louis Jean has the info this early.  As well since who knows what the new CBA might bring.

EDIT:

Weirdness:
Bob McKenzie ‏ @TSNBobMcKenzie

Something weird going on in MTL. Habs' website, for a time this a.m., announced team was buying out Scott Gomez's contract. Not there now.

EDIT #2: Now McKenzie is saying the website never reported it, just another news source.

So, long and short of it....buyout story looks like complete BS (which makes by far the most sense).

Exactly.  It's beyond comprehension.  I'm gonna be mad for a while just because he was in the final 2.  Thankfully for me they didn't pick him, but that would have been comedic gold for all of you for the next few years.

I can't believe Pierre McGuire is really that (><) close to becoming a GM. I mean he apparently was runner up here, beating out Francois Giguere, Claude Loiselle, Blair Mackasey, Julien Brisbois, and Jim frickin' Nill. I mean really, he's that well respected in the community?  :o

Bergevin's an interesting choice, in that his resume is very similar to what JFJ's was before the Leafs hired him.

And here I thought the Leafs finally had their No.1 centre...  :(

Well, with the exception of the relative success of the Blackhawks vs. the Blues, I agree.

Darren Dreger‏@DarrenDreger

Leafs haven't been asked by Habs to speak to Rick Dudley. But, expect Dudley and Marty Lapointe to be among Bergevin's early hires

It'll be a shame to lose Dudley.

Isn't Dudley already an assisted GM?  Why would he leave the Leafs for the same position with the Habs?
