The Official TFC/Soccer thread

Dortmund did make it interesting, went up 2-0 in the first half which ended up being the final score, lose 3-2 on aggregate though.

Madrid almost looked ordinary without CR7...
So the semi draw is Bayern / Real and Chelsea / Athletico...I hope it's an all Madrid final

I just got finished watching the ESPN 30 for 30 about the Hillsborough stadium disaster and it was a really great entry in the series. For someone who knew almost nothing about it save a couple mentions here and there it was pretty mind blowing that something like that could happen.

TFC may have lost in Dallas last weekend, but Julio Cesar pulled off a superb save that earned him MLS Save of the Week honours.

I still remember turning on Soccer Saturday and seeing some of the images of people being crushed up against the fence that day. The fences had been put up to prevent pitch invasions by fans. That disaster led to them being removed in short order as well as the requirement to eliminate standing room in stadiums across England.

Shocking eh. The BBC Panoramic on H96 is well done as well and equally disturbing.

Seahawk - Soccer Saturday nice. Go Graham Leggat!

TFC blows lead to Revolution losing 2-1 on Canadian rookie Donell Henry's gaffes.  The Toronto FC now sports a 3-4-O record so far this season.

Oranje Devils....City set the benchmark on playing attacking and exciting football this year so this should get United back into a more offensive minded squad and more enjoyable to watch. Don't think we'll see any 'total football' tho. With LvG taking over and RVP already there I wonder if their will be an exodus of dutch players signing at OT after the World Cup. Robben? Snejder? van der Vaart?

Could happen.  Here's perhaps a clue (no specifics mentioned):

2.Quality signings: Luring top names to a club missing out on Champions League football is not an easy task but Van Gaal will quickly have to identify his transfer targets and splash out a considerable amount of money to sign them.

Yeah the no Champions League is a bit of a hurdle but they can still qualify for Europa league which lessens the blow a bit...this year was an anomaly - it is still Man United with incredible clout / cash / popularity / branding mega giant / respectability. van Gaal just cements that - they now have a direct pipe line to one of the best player generating countries / leagues in the world.

Sorry HF1, ManU will not play in Europe during the 14-15 season. The Europa league places went to Everton, Spurs, and Hull City. The place allocated to the FA Cup winner gets passed on to the runners-up not to the next team in the standings.

That was me seahawk....I forgot about Hull City back dooring it. I also thought I read something about United season ticket holders not wanting to have to pay more for the Europa league games..

I don't think the Europa league would have made United a more attractive destination for potential transfer targets.

And pass up a chance to play Rapid Wien or historic Midtjylland? What about Sillam?e Kalev away under the half working lights of their 2500 seater? Every footballer dreams of these kinds of matches! Hello?!

General rule of thumb is add 30 seconds per sub so there's 2.5 minutes. Athletico was stalling and time wasting at every whistle and dead ball. I really didn't have any issues with the 5 minutes. Extra time was a fitting way for the game to end. I was just happy that it didn't go to PK's.

I don't have any issue with how much time was added on <and it's per sub + corner kicks ftr> I just feel bad for them. They came as close to winning a CL title as you can get and did so without their best player <faulty horse placenta?> The only complaint about the ref I have is I felt the pk he awarded at 3-1 was a bit of a slap in the face to Athletico. Don't get me wrong it was a foul but the result was well assured at that point. I'm sure the fact that Ronaldo was 1 goal away from setting a new CL record accounted for 98% of the decision.
Since SAF retired any / all extra time is affectionately referred to as "Fergie time" btw, I can't remember who coined that but it's a great line
