Thornton signs 700k

September 17, 1997, the day Joe Thornton picked up his first-ever point while wearing an NHL uniform (an assist in a 3-2 Bruins preseason win against the Blues in Oklahoma City), is also the day Auston Matthews was born.

How fitting would it be if Thornton's last point is an OT assist to Matthews for the Stanley Cup winning goal?
;)
I like the way you think, so I think I will have a drink.

I was not expecting him to sign for $700k at all. Even Koivu got $1.5mil.

He's worth $700k for the facial hair alone!

I'm nothing if not mr super delusional fan who gets let down year after year but it doesn't stop him from making these ridiculous pronouncements cause I want a Hollywood style ending.

Engvall is Marlies/trade bound. He's waiver exempt for 15 more NHL games and makes 1.25K so 175K will still count against the cap when he's sent down.

We have already lost 2 of our solid PK guys in Kapanen and Johnnson.  I dont see Engvall being sent down based on his effectiveness on PK alone.
As for Thornton and Speeza, I could see them playing somewhat of a platoon thru the season.  There will be some matchups where they will just need a speedier lineup and one will definitely sit.

Man, when Marleau signed I thought HE would be the cup-less elder statesman hoisting Lord Stanley in Toronto. Now we've got two sweet-passing veteran centres who still have their shot in Thornton and Spezza. 4th line is Legacy Line in Toronto. Welcome Jumbo!

Exciting news!! I rushed here to see how excited Carlton was with the news~ :)

PRETTY EXCITED

This is a key signing.  I'm a big fan.  Now they've got some depth down the middle.

I'm looking forward to the PP looks.

I know I need to stop reading them, but the sportsnet comments are overwhelmingly negative. It?s actually funny. Dubas is a complete idiot according to most of the comments.

Oh well.

There is a contingent of people out there that feel that Montreal is now the second best team in the Atlantic behind Tampa, that Boston has fallen right off the map, and that Toronto might have made some improvements, but they will have to wait and see.  This contingent seems to live in Ottawa and appears on Ottawa radio.

They mock Dubas on the radio in Ottawa saying that he is building his team using analytics and that it will never work.  I kinda want to see it work just because I feel that those comments are meant to be inflammatory and that they are just saying them to get a rise out of Leaf fans.

Me too and for what it's worth. Thornton is a puck possession guy, just like the style the Leafs want to play. He still put up more points then Kerfoot last year on a terrible SJS team. Will his moves work? Don't know but I like what he's done. He's addressed the areas of concern so far. Let's not forget, Dubas did build a Calder Cup winning team in the AHL with the same philosophy.
This notion that the Habs are ahead now is premature. Yes Suzuki and Kont had good playoffs but I wouldn't go reading too much into performances after the return to play.  I'll take JT and Matthews over their top 2 centres every day of the week.
I also don't see Boston going anywhere yet. They'll address their D but their forwards are still pretty good.

Montreal? Seriously?

Tampa and Boston might not matter if there?s going to be a Canadian division.

Kind of feels like the Leafs are going for the 2012 Stanley Cup
I honestly have no idea whether you're any or several of: 1) deliberately paraphrasing Steve Simmons' tweet, 2) unintentionally paraphrasing Steve Simmons' tweet, 3) mocking the trade-bashers, or 4) agreeing with the trade-bashers.
