A few cuts. Sandin's is interesting as it still hasn't been decided (or at least announced) where he'll be playing this season.

He's got smaller ice experience in the O, so I'm not sure going back to larger ice would be ideal.  I'd prefer they do what they did with Liljegren and have him get used to the lessening time to manage the puck.

This is my thinking too, I don't see what's gained by sending him to Sweden.  Totally different style of game, you have no control how the coaches decide to use/not use him, and you can't watch him up close and personal any time you feel like it.  I think the Leafs should take control of the development of their european first round picks like they did with Liljegren last year.

Agreed.  The only issue is how much icetime will he get and if that is enough.

As of right now we've got Dermott, Rosen, Marincin, Borgman, and Nielsen as LHD (behind Rielly and Gardiner).  One or two of them will be on the Leafs (most likely 1), leaving up to 4 guys he's battling for icetime with.

(On the right side they have LoVerde, Liljegren, Subban, one of Ozhiganov/Carrick/Holl)

Now, Marincin getting claimed on waivers, or Nielsen getting traded away (which is my preference) would open up some space.

Is Matthews' catch and release good enough to beat out the historically super effective RH one-timer on the goalie's blocker side?

Yup.

It's pretty much 100% official Carrick won't be in the starting 6 on opening night, but what do the Leafs do with him now? Press box? Waivers/Marlies? Trade him?

I?m expecting Carrick to be traded. Possibly one of McElhinnney or Pickard traded as well.

I think something will happen. Even if guys get picked off waivers the Leafs gain more contract room, so there is still upside. Will be interesting to see what Dubas does in the next few days.

Now that the camp and exhibition games are over, what are your thoughts? I watched virtually all the preseason games, and mine are the following:

The Great:
Marner, Tavares, Kadri, Matthews.. etc.. - all the players that we assumed would be fun to watch showed up immediately as fun to watch. During the preseason games, I almost wanted them to stumble a little bit, to have something to build on for up to the reg season, but these guys looked in form almost from the get-go. The PP is ridiculous with so many high talent options, my only concern being that they dish it off too much instead of shooting. Marner is a human highlight reel. So much fun to watch.

The Good:
Moore+Engvall, Sandin+SDA, Ozhiganov and Ennis. The first two showed up trying to turn some heads, and succeeded, in my eyes. On a lesser team, they'd probably get a look in the starting lineup based on their camp. The bottom two showed massive potential, particularly Sandin. To step into D at that age even at the pre-season level and look so competent is really encouraging. Oz looked NHL capable, if not NHL ready. Ennis isn't going to make anyone forget about Nylander, but he looked like he could contribute on any line.

The Mediocre:
Rosen, Carrick, Holl, Borgman, Grundstrom. I was willing to give Dubas a pass on adding anything significant on the D side (Oz notwithstanding) on the assumption that a few of these guys would make the jump, and Zaitsev surely being better than LY, along with Dermott starting in the top 4 but none of these guys looked good for anything longer than an occasional shift. The leafs outscored their problems when the had the big guns out against weak teams, but there was the scrambling around in the D zone for extended periods that was pretty troubling. These guys aren't the answer. If there's an injury on the back end, then it's a massive gamble with these guys in the lineup. Grundstrom was... there. Wasn't he supposed to be the 2nd coming of Komorov with more talent?

Time for waivers:
Leivo, Marincin. Leivo in particular bugged me, because he's shown flashes of being "undeservedly" a press box player. You'd think that now that there's truly an opportunity he'd come out ready to prove he's on the team, but instead of taking a page from Ennis' book, and come out with that extra effort, he was content to float around and try to catch a pass for a goal. That penalty he took at the end of the 2nd period was the kind of effort that drives coaches absolutely insane - watch it if you haven't. Sure, he got some assists on the 2nd to last game, but there was nothing prior, and I can't see why there aren't better options - especially if Babcock actually wants to prove that there's opportunity for guys that earn it.

Marincin has nothing going for him but reach. He handles the puck like a hand grenade, is slow to pivot, reads plays poorly.. just cut bait. He's a career AHL player. That doesn't seem a popular opinon with most here, but I just don't see the upside. I know the comment was made that he can play PK, but so could Polak, and I didn't see any objections to running him out of town. And I'd rather Polak on the ice 5 on 5 over Marincin.

I'd say you pretty much nailed it.

I was rooting for Marincin but yeah.  I've thought what you thought about Leivo for a long time -- I don't see what sets him apart.  He kind of reminds me of Holland in that respect, or perhaps Colborne or someone like that.

The defense is pretty much what it was last year.  It's OK ... until it's not.

It's a very little thing to nit pick, but I don't have a clue what Gauthier did to deserve being the 13th forward to kick off the season.

It seems painfully obvious to everybody except Babcock that he just isn't a NHL player, or anything close to it.

The Goat has to clear waivers so I suspect they'll keep him here until Nylander signs. Maybe a lil insurance to push Lindholm??

I've been saying this about Leivo for the past two seasons. He was the exact same player here in Juniors. He'd show glimpses of being a good player with some scoring ability then either do something completely idiotic or he'd disappear and you wouldn't even notice he was playing. Benoit Pouliot was the same player here with better hands and a nicer stride.

Not too surprised about Leivo.  Sounds like an AHLer for life type player.  It's pretty obvious one can see that is all he has or seems to offer of himself on that ice.  When he's good it's noticeable and when he's so-so it's even more noticeable.

Either this guy hasn't played enough or he simply can't improve at thelevel that's expected of him.

Sparks over McBackup, and Carrick loses out to Holl and Marincin.

HEY THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED (other than the potential trades, clearly no bites).

Carlton, what was that Marincin bet you had going with Frank again?

Well, I would have stayed with McBackup but I obviously hope I am wrong. Carrick seemed popular in the room so hopefully it's not a morale dampener.
