TSN out, NHL and Rogers announce 12 yr $5.2 billion TV deal

Has anyone computed what this means for the salary cap in coming years?  (The deal starts next year -- does it affect next year's cap?)  It should give it a bump, yes? 5-10 million per year?

Is one of the reasons for the Leafs popularity the fact that they have dominated HNIC broadcasts on saturday, creating fans across Canada.  Will this go away, weakening the team's relative popularity and coffers in the future?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/globe-on-hockey/mirtle-how-the-nhls-salary-cap-will-jump-10-million-in-two-years/article15627506/

Basically Mirtle says the cap should be about $67.7mil next season, then $71.3mil after that when this deal kicks in, and $74.8mil the season after.

The leafs are going to need to shed a body if the cap only goes up to 67 million next year, I think (though Nonis managed to get more guys under the cap this year than I thought possible).

I think trading Franson prior to the deadline makes sense (because I assume Liles is untradeable or he'd be gone by now).  The only trickiness is the fact that the leafs have so few right-handed Dmen.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but with RSN having full control of content, is Cherry on a tighter leash?

My guess is if he doesn't decide to "retire" they will keep him around but in a greatly reduced role. Maybe one short segment before the game vs. the whole 1st intermission soapbox thing.  More of almost a symbolic role than what he's been doing today.

I would have to say he will be on a short lease, ratings or not. We are talking about a network that fired Damian Goddard for making outrageous statements. Who's to say that Cherry won't offend someone along the way, and when he does, and they decide he can keep his job, there will those calling Rogers hypocrites.

That's why I think they will keep him but not give him his current pulpit to say whatever he wants.

Cherry is pretty good when they have him on the ice to start games with McLean but I don't think they do that anymore. He was good at the rah rah stuff there and usually didn't say anything stupid.  If they used him only for that, it would keep Don around and be the best use of his personality.

Could you imagine if they let him be on the intermission panel with the other guys? Would LOVE to see him go toe to toe with some of them.  It would be so Jerry Springer. :D

I think the TV deal will impact the cap next year:

If a significant (i.e., $20 million or more) onetime increase or decrease to League-wide revenues (e.g., by reason of the addition or loss of a national television contract or the scheduled opening of one or more new arenas which is expected to result in a significant increase in League-wide revenues) is anticipated in the next League Year, the parties will endeavor to estimate the expected increase or decrease and incorporate that estimate into the above-stated formula for calculating the Adjusted Midpoint.

TSN re-signs their big-3:

TSN with a big statement here that they aren't just going to give up. A lot of people figured that Sportsnet would improve their broadcasts by poaching these guys. Hopefully they have a plan B.

well they do have the cbc guys already (although probably friedman is the only one worth keeping)

I'm really shocked that Bob McKenzie is staying.  With no NHL games for 12 years, you would think he'd want to go where the games are.  I realize that TSN might still get some local Leafs games, but that's nothing compared to what they have now, especially with playoff hockey.

I'm sure plan B revolves around building a crew out of the CBC guys plus whatever they feel like using from their current group.  So worst case things won't get below the current line that HNIC has set.

Most seem to want Friedman to be the new HNIC anchor.

On twitter, Chris Cuthbert's name came up as someone who would be great to bring to be the main play by play guy going forward, presumably covering the Leafs.  I would be so very happy if this came true. They could just as easily give that gig to Joe Bowen though.

Someone else suggested Gord Miller and I threw up a little.

It's the opposite for me.  McKenzie's extremely loyal and he plans on retiring in the next 5 to 8 years by all accounts, so I'm not surprised he's staying.

It's Duthie and particularly Dreger that surprises me.

Dreger doesn't surprise me that much. He used to work for Sportsnet, so, he already has some idea of what he'd be getting involved with there. Clearly, he prefers TSN.

As for Bobby Mac - on top of approaching retirement, I get the feeling he's more interested in covering international tournaments than NHL games, and TSN still has all of those.

Except his job has never really been about in-game analysis. He's more been about things like trades, scouting draft prospects and other behind the scenes sort of stuff. Games might provide an audience for that stuff but he can still generate the same amount of content for TSN without them.

Gord Miller, Pierre LeBrun, Aaron Ward, and Ray Ferraro have all re-upped with TSN too.

Which kind of sucks as a hockey fan really.

Good for them I suppose. I just can't help but think some of them are going to regret not jumping once the deal actually kicks in.

I dunno. If they received raises, for presumably less work/fewer nights a week. Might work out for them just fine.

Yeah, though, it wouldn't surprise me if they have opt out clauses or other such provisions in their contracts.

Looks like that monkey spiked their drinks with crazy juice.

Simmons suggests in his column today that Paul Romanuk is likely coming back from Europe to be the #2 play-by-play guy behind Hughson. That's excellent news if true.

Well, here's one TSN personality joining Rogers' hockey coverage.  Gives me some hope it won't be just the same people they've had.

@DaveRandorf

I am honoured and thrilled to be part of the new #NHL team at Rogers. An exciting new chapter in my career. More details tomorrow.

Bob Cole has been confirmed as returning next year.  I'm very excited for more Kessel with the puck....I mean JVR....I mean Gunnarsson.

Those 3 plus Hughson of course will do the national games. I just hope we don't have to hear Bowen again for the local ones.
