Winnipeg Jets Thread

I don't mind the actual jet in the bolder logo, a nod to the Arrow?

No, just generic yet somehow CF-18(ish) I think.

Either way I don't mind it. My drummer's dad was a fighter pilot and a candidate to fly the 206 so maybe I'm just being nostalgic.

Nor do I. I like all things aviation (I'm in the industry.)

Really?  I kind of like the different face they use there -- nobody else has anything like it.  The whole thing is retro.

I have the complete opposite impression of it - it's trying too hard to be modern, and, well, more and more teams are going retro. On top of that, the J looks really stupid, doesn't flow into the E naturally and the T does not flow into the S smoothly, and that's really jarring. Honestly, it looks like something a high school kid fiddling around in Photoshop came up with.

Huh.  I don't agree at all.  I think it's dynamic, it's got thrust, and of course that's what the designer was aiming for, to echo the team name.

The jet superimposed over the Leaf has a problem though: the bottom of the "leaf" is pointed like a dagger.  That I don't understand.  EDIT: Just saw Wendel's comment, he's right.

But there's no arguing about aesthetics.

I immediately thought the red point on the bottom was the jet's thrust or flame coming out.  Single engine, so I'm thinking F-35.

I definitely like the logo. I especially like the lettering on the secondary logo. It's definitely not trying too hard to be modern and is clearly a retro-inspired type to me. The slight cuts into the J and T and clever I think.

I agree with ZBBM about the maple leaf, it's the only weak part. It's confusing how you can see the stem but not the top point; it causes visual tension.

I'm not crazy about either logo, although I think I'll need to see them on the uniforms before I make up my mind completely, but the lettering is really bizarre. If I didn't know that the team was named the Jets I'm not sure that first letter of the cursive script would immediately jump out to me as being a J.

You have to look at the word as a total image though. I doubt anyone, even those few who look at it and don't know it's the Jets' logo, would read that word as anything other than 'Jets.'

The logo has been released. They are at the bottom of the page at this link. Seems like they went with a bit of an Air Force theme and appear to have kept the old colors.

I am not a fan of it, but most of the fans of the team seem to like it and thats what matters.

At the very least they didn't go for any of the crazy colored, asymmetrical designs, like that crappy Buffalo the Sabres had for a while or that tribal Coyote in Phoenix. I'm sure as the team matures the jersey designs will get better, much like Minnesota's new jersey or Columbus' third jersey.

or those logos that make it look like its wind swept, going real fast.... ugh

I really like the secondary logo and I don't hate the primary one (though, I don't love it either), but I really dislike the way they've done the team name in the text logo. It just doesn't look right.

I kinda like the main logo and the shoulder patch, but that "Jets" word logo reminds me too much of:

I 'm not a fan of that new logo...but it might grow on me.I still like the full name of the team in the crest, like the Leafs and the Rangers have.

It could also read the Canada Jets, rather than Winnipeg, if one is not familiar with which city is represented by it.

I personally like the written logo because it addresses the above issue.

If they had wanted to insert a "jet", all they needed to do was insert a smaller flying image of a jet cutting across the e and t in the written logo image, as if a jet is streaking across the writing.  I think that would have looked slightly classier and a re-arrange of the original logo.
The one with the jet superimposed on the red Maple Leaf could have been used for the shoulder patches.

Just my opinion.  :)

Fair enough. I was more making a point about the script in general. A sloppy J and a crooked e doesn't stop me from reading it as Jets but it makes it look pretty messy all the same.

The T and S meeting at a hardpoint instead of flowing into each other just adds to that - especially considering the top of the S is flat and the bottom is rounded. THe whole thing is poorly executed, in my opinion.

I agree, especially about the s. Again, can you read it as an S? Sure, but it's still a weird amalgam of almost letters.

The shame of it is that the old jets logo is actually pretty clever where the J in jets is also the I in Winnipeg and a hockey stick.

Yeah. Like I said in an earlier post, it really looks like something a high school kid threw together - though, considering the decisions this organization has made since the move, that's hardly surprising.

With that said, let's take a look at some alternatives fans have put together.

The links are for images that are way too big to be placed on the board.

I really like the last one. It looks authentically retro, has a J that doubles as a stick and the rest of the logo resembles a Jet fin. I think it'd look fantastic on a jersey or any merch like a baseball cap. It's really too bad.
