Winnipeg Jets Thread

Someone pointed out on a St. Louis Blues board that the new Jets logo kind of looks like this one:

They kind of have a point, but I don't think they are similiar enough to cause any problems.

I'm of the opinion that it looks totally like that.  What logo is that?

Yeah. I'd say it's pretty much a recoloured version of that exact logo, with some of the edges smoothed out.

The Jets confirmed Friday that Swiss goaltender David Aebischer is coming to training camp on a tryout basis. Aebischer, who appeared in 214 NHL games for Colorado, Montreal and Phoenix, spent the last four years playing in his native country.

The NHL has released its national television schedule and the Winnipeg Jets will be featured prominently this season.

The Jets will make 21 appearances on CBC?S Hockey Night in Canada -- only the Montreal Canadiens (28) and Toronto Maple Leafs (24) are featured more on CBC ? and will appear five times on TSN, four times on French-language RDS, once on NBC/Versus and twice on the NHL Network-US.

And, fear not: although the new radio/TV agreement between the Jets and TSN has yet to be formally announced all the team?s games ? including those not listed here on the national schedules - will be on the tube this season.

THE blessing has come from one of the Winnipeg Jets' original saints, an icon in this town and in hockey to this very day.

Yes, it's now official: Evander Kane will wear No. 9 for the Jets this season after the organization consulted Bobby Hull and he gave the thumbs up to the idea of the gifted young winger wearing his old digit on his back.

WINNIPEG - You know fans are jazzed up about the return of the Winnipeg Jets when a backup goalie going for a skate causes a stir.

Chris Mason became the first member of the Jets to hit the practice rink in Winnipeg Monday, skating at the MTS IcePlex. He also signed autographs and debuted his new Iron Maiden Winnipeg Jets hockey mask.

Mason, who arrived in Winnipeg Sunday night, said being in the city, touring the MTS Centre and getting on the ice make the move of the Atlanta Thrashers to Manitoba ?seem real.?

?I just got a tour of the rink last night and it?s just so exciting,? Mason told CBC. ?My dad was with me and we got a chance to go see the rooms and take a peek at the rink and all that. It?s really exciting.

?We?re starting to see all the Jets logos and the signs on the buildings downtown on Portage Avenue was pretty cool. It just feels real and I?m super excited.?

Mason played in 33 games last season, serving as the backup to starter Ondrej Pavelec. The 35-year-old from Red Deer, Alta., has played parts of 11 seasons in the NHL, with Nashville, St. Louis and Atlanta.

The Jets open training camp on Sept. 17 but members of the team are expected to be skating in the city from now until this time, with most players likely to arrive after Labour Day.

I arrive in Winnipeg next Monday for the month, training for work just outside of the city, its going to be interesting to see the city buzzing about the NHL season starting, I am going to the Canes/Jets pre-season game, GO KABBY GO !

?The authentic jerseys won?t be available until October, and replica jerseys likely not until November. That comes from the manufacturer,? said Scott Brown, director of communications for True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Jets.

Nevertheless, photos purporting to be leaks of the new Jets jerseys have been circulating on the Internet for weeks.

Brown said a common one showing a dark blue jersey with the main plane logo in the middle is ?not even close? to legitimate. The same goes for any other supposed sneak previews.

Bruno Delorme, a marketing professor at Concordia University and Marianopolis College in Montreal, said fake sports jerseys are a ?big time? problem.

?A lot of factories in China are flooding the market with unlicensed, counterfeit jerseys. They?re shrewd. They know that even in tough economic times, sports is recession-proof,? Delorme said. ?They look almost identical but the problems occur after you wash it four or five times.?

Winnipeg will be front and centre when the National Hockey League raises the curtain on the 2011-12 regular season.

Sources have told the Free Press the season's Oct. 6 debut -- dubbed NHL Face-Off -- will include a live network broadcast launch from The Forks on opening night.

Who should play at the NHL Face-Off at The Forks? The campaign begins with the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto facing the Maple Leafs at 6 p.m. and the Pittsburgh Penguins in Vancouver meeting the Canucks at 9 p.m.

The festivities will all be part of a four-day build-up to the Jets' first contest at the MTS Centre against the Canadiens on Sunday, Oct. 9. The game will be televised nationally on CBC, and the puck drops at 4 p.m.

Word is the party in Winnipeg will include a "major Canadian concert act," with one of the bands rumoured to be Nickelback.

The NHL ran a similar campaign in past seasons with last year's NHL Face-Off including an entertainment festival in Toronto that featured live musical performances, interactive hockey-skills games, giveaways, appearances by former NHL players, merchandise tents and live game broadcasts on giant video screens.

Kick ass! Looks like I will have to stick around in Winnipeg for an extra week to goto this, I have to be there on the Saturday for a wedding anyways, so might as well spend the week rather then drive home for a few days of work lol

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Jet Blake Wheeler tweeted yesterday "No jerseys for a while. Just got pants and gloves from Warrior...I'll throw some pics on tomorrow."

He made good on that promise Tuesday, posting a picture of his pants.

Wheeler, who tweets under the username @BiggieFunke, also weighed in on the style of the gear: "looks pretty sharp!"

The forward?s pants are navy blue with the script logo on the bottom right leg. What may appear to be a "W" for Winnipeg is actually the logo of manufacturer Warrior Hockey.

The team?s new jerseys ? home and away, there won?t be a third jersey for at least the first season ? will be unveiled in early September, but won?t be available for purchase until weeks later.

?The authentic jerseys won?t be available until October, and replica jerseys likely not until November. That comes from the manufacturer,? said Scott Brown, director of communications for True North Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Jets.

Brian Munz is leaving CJOB to become the part-time radio voice of the Winnipeg Jets.

Munz, who spent the last five seasons calling Manitoba Moose games for CJOB, will apparently share the play-by-play duties with Winnipegosis native Dennis Beyak on Sports Radio 1290.

According to a source, Beyak will do the play-by-play on the TSN regional television broadcasts, while Munz will call the same contests on the radio. When the Jets are being shown on national television, Beyak will move into the radio play-by-play chair.

TSN won the regional television rights to carry Jets contests, and it mandated that Sports Radio 1290, which is also owned by Bell Media, get the radio deal.

I read on the TSN website that the Winnipeg broadcast region will include Thunder Bay. I hope that's not true, at least not so it interferes with Leaf broadcasts.

Those are cool - I might have to get one!

If you want one the Replica's don't come out to the public until October and Authentic ones until November, the last I heard anyways.

Not a bad looking jersey, but reminds me of the HNIC ones.

To be honest, the fakes look better.

Someone really needs to let True North know that appealing design actually matters and higher a freaking consultant, because they're continually dropping the ball from a design perspective IMO.
