2012 NHL Entry Draft

Buffalo made out like bandits today.

Not really, both those guys (one of which likely unfairly) are in no way sure-fire guys.  Grigorenko has been well-documented, but that other pick had wide variations in scouts opinions on him.

I too can't believe that Burke said he'd take Rielly 1st. For one, that's flat-out ludicrous (although I don't doubt he actually thinks that). Secondly, if he actually did do that if in the position, I'd have been calling for his immediate dismissal. It'd have been smarter to just say that the Leafs had him rated as the best defenceman.

Comments like this come back to haunt Burke.

I don't know how the Leafs continue to screw up when it comes to assembling an upper management team.  Burke just doesn't seem to be able to do it.  The game has passed him by.  His big thing was using free agent signings and trades as tools to bolster his team.  He was pretty good a doing those things in other cities, but both avenues have now dried up.  The only hope the Leafs probably have is that Rogers seems to have been able to put a pretty decent management team together for the Blue Jays, but even there, the jury is still out, and there is no indication that Bell and Rogers are going to be able agree on the direction the team should take.

This Burke is out of touch because he didn't take a forward is all very amusing since the next forward didn't get taken until the 11th pick in the draft. If Brian Burke is out of touch, so are Bob Murray, Chuck Fletcher, Ray Shero, Kevin Cheveldayoff and Steve Yzerman, all who decided that the best available was also a defenseman.

Lin7, I agree 100%. I find it very amusing that he's such a failure because he didn't pick Grigorenko or Forsberg. I'll admit that I was hoping for one of those players, but I'm not upset with the pick they made.

He's not a failure because of that one pick.  It's merely one more straw...

The idea of taking Rielly first is about as ludicrous as Edmonton playing footsie with Murray the way they did, only to see him go second. The difference here is that Burke didn't project it like that before this years draft.

For those that don't believe him, why? Before the draft they hinted at drafting by positional need being out of the ordinary but something they might consider, if they were looking at centre and Galchenyuk was that guy then it kind of makes sense.

I dunno, maybe I'm just not seeing it.

It's considered ludicrous because if Burke had the first overall pick, would he really have taken Rielly?  Would people have been happy with that pick? I don't think that's the pick he would have made if he had the 1st overall pick.  Therefore it's ludicrous to say "we had him rated as the first pick".

I didn't know it was possible for my opinion of Burke's managerial acumen to sink any lower, but it did. You'd think he'd grow tired of grand, delusional statements like "we would have taken him at number 1".  But he hasn't.

Sure, but taking him at 5 doesn't appear to be a reach at all so I think folks need to chill a little about on what Burke actually says and focus more on what he does. Honestly, we all know Burke's something of a blowhard. I don't understand why folks aren't past that by now.

I guess I just don't see an incongruity there, you could rate him first but take Galchenyuk to suit your positional needs.

I'm not sure making people happy really matters here and now.

He doesn't need to state it.  Whether it's factually true or not.  It doesn't need to come out.  Not only has he made a statement that may put his scouts in a bad light, he has also fired a big ol' FU at Columbus and the Islanders as they drafted defencemen before the Leafs, and he has pretty much come out and said "You drafted wrong".  I don't mind the bravado.  I mind the fact that he can't back it up.

Rielly hasn't played a game yet.

A big FU? Really? All Burke said was that they had him Ranked 1st. Whether that's true or not it's hardly an FU to the other teams.

As I said, he doesn't need to state it.  Whether it's factually true or not.  The bravado statement was more of a general statement of how Burke generally conducts himself.  I mind the fact that he still has that attitude, but really has nothing to back it up over the last 4 years.  Why invite more criticism?  Why bring on more scrutiny to the Toronto Maple Leafs organization?

So, anyone have any thoughts on who we should be taking at #35?
I hope we take an offensive forward, someone like Frk, Collberg, Kosmachuk, or Nieves.  Maybe take a chance on the Swedish goaltender Dansk too.
