2012 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

There's definitely no established way to develop pitchers with the intention of limiting their injuries. These guys throw incredibly hard and are usually pretty committed to their delivery. You can make minor changes, but if you change the delivery too much, you can really devalue the asset.

So, accept that pitcher's injuries are a part of baseball and hope that you have enough depth to withstand said injuries. I don't think there's a pitching coach out there that can minimize injuries while maximizing performance.

Hasn't there just been a league-wide increase in pitching injuries?  Unless perhaps someone can show me otherwise, I think the whole pitching injuries thing is blown out of proportion because of what happened this past season.

- Pitching injuries have reached epidemic levels.  Research shows that overuse leads to fatigue, then mechanical breakdowns, then disaster.  But injuries have risen even as teams impose pitch counts and reduce workloads -- by switching to 5-man rotations

- The 10 MLB pitchers who threw the most innings in 1971 averaged 307.4 IP; in 1991 the average was 249.1 IP, and in 2011, 238.2 IP.  The decline doesn't seem to be helping.

- In assessing injury risk, what really matters is how many throws a pitcher makes when he's tired.  Pitch counts don't make sense either.  Starters are averaging close to 100 pitches per game this season

- Pitchers aren't averaging fewer pitches per start than they were 50 years ago -- but the spread around the average is much narrower

- For example, in a study that examined the Dodgers from 1947 to 1964, starters threw 130 or more pitchers per game much more often than starters from the 1998 team.  But, the earlier-era guys also threw 60 or fewer pitches three times more frequently than their modern counterparts, according to research

- Teams need to study the kinetics of their individual pitchers to better pinpoint when players fatigue and when their mechanics start slipping

Interesting read about how the Jays-Marlins deal came together day-by-day.

Pat Hentgen is back as the #BlueJays bullpen coach. He has a great relationship with Gibbons -- that had to be a factor in saying yes.

Oh, the drama...

Heard Dickey will not do extension with #bluejays which could be what is slowing talks with Tor #Mets

Good. I'm not exactly enamoured with the idea of the Jays giving up quality assets for a 38 year old knuckleballer who has been less than impressive when he's pitched for AL teams. Yeah, he won the Cy Young this past season and has pitched well as a Met, but, I'm still not a fan.

He's not a guy that I"d give up much for, based on the reasons you stated. I'm actually pretty happy with our rotation.

I'd love to add Dickey and really go for it in 2013 but...it depends on what we give up for him. At this point, D'Arnaud and Gose should be off-limits unless they were part of a bigger deal with more coming back.

To me, that seems like a slight overpayment. Maybe if it were expanded I could swallow that more easily.

Edit: Then again, maybe that's what Dickey is worth... I don't know... No sense analyzing a deal that hasn't happened yet.

FAN 590 had said that "reports were that Arencibia and Gose could be the two players". Unconfirmed of course.

More than I'd want to give up for him, but, not an insane amount, at least. Some reports are saying the Mets are demanding D'Arnaud, in which case, I'd say they can keep Dickey.

I'm trying to decide who's worth more, Shields or Dickey and in turn, trying to figure out how some of the rumored names stack up against the value of Myers... oh, and my head hurts.

Shields is almost a decade younger, signed for an extra season and has proven himself capable in the toughest division in baseball.
