As we suspected, sources say #nhljets will put Ondrej Pavelec on waivers today

This one's big. Pavelec was seriously holding the Jets back from being a really good hockey team and it didn't seem like their coaches knew it. Handing the reigns to Hellebuyck could make them a playoff team.

(It's "reins".)

I bet you were just chomping at the bit to point that out.

I think the issue with claiming Pulkkinen is that when it happens at the end of camp, when a team's made all of its evaluations and likes it's chemistry and mix that introducing something new will be seen as significantly riskier than it would if it happened earlier in the process.

Pulkkinen is a promising guy and worth taking a look at but the question will be how much the team wants to shake things up for him.

I don't think it'd shake things up too much. Most of the team hasn't really played together outside of pre-season.

I don't really mean in a chemistry sense, more in the sense of the team's plans. I think a management group can get married to "Okay, Player A is on the first line and he does X, Y and Z well" and so on throughout the roster and then if you introduce someone else with different strengths/attributes you have to look over the entire composition of the roster and decide if everything still fits the way you want it.

Sure, a team might look at a simple "Pulkkinen comes in, Brown goes down" swap and maybe that's where you make the change so it might still happen.

Aw, Dug....  :'(

Pulkkinen would be a no brainer if the leafs didn't have so much in the pipeline. I dunno. I say keep powder dry on this one. It's not like he doesn't have his deficiencies.. a great shot, but wheels aren't considered to be anything special. Isn't that essentially Rychel?

Regarding Parenteau, I don't see the point. If there was minimal interest at the trade deadline last year, and the islanders see something they don't like - why waste a claim? There's plenty of guys in the org that can play those minutes.

I see from above that the Leafs have first dibs on waivers but how many players can they claim as the team with the first option?

One, I think.

Ah, i see. Admittedly, I really don't anything about him, such as the type of player he is.

Pulkkinen raises a fun question for discussion.
Waiver pickups usually have at least one major game flaw. Which flaw is an automatic deal breaker for you?

the criticism of him seems to be his skating....will that keep him out of a regular NHL spot ?

I saw him quite a bit when the Marlies played Grand Rapids the past few years, he has a wicked shot and seems to make things happen whenever he is in the offensive zone.

His skating isn't amazing, but I've never looked at him and thought he was slow. I wonder if the issue is his commitment to the 200ft game.

I would definitely claim him, he has offensive instincts that are NHL level. Let Babcock and the other coaches work with him.

For emphasis, I'd be much more excited by this claim than I was for Corrado's last year.

His lack of playmaking I would say.  He's a pure goal scorer, don't look for him to be a setup guy.

As many as they want.

Wait a second. So you're saying that the team with the #1 waiver priority can use it as much as they want? So if the team with the #1 waiver priority claims five players that the team with the #2 waiver priority also claims, the #1 team gets all five?

In 2015, when Pulkkinen was called up for the second time, Babcock said Blashill kept up a steady stream of compliments about Pulkkinen and his game. Babcock thought he had the tools of a good player but didn't see enough of it (considering the lineups then) to justify much ice time.

Now that Blashill is behind the bench, he actually cuts one of his favourite players for Mantha and Athanasiou to cycle through the pressbox. He said it was because Pulkkinen wasn't producing as expected and for someone that isn't fast and isn't big, he had no other value on the ice at the moment and needs playing time to build back up.

Should we claim him?

We certainly have more patience for that sort of thing this year. He also plays LW as a right hander (Babcock tried him on Sheahan's RW before) and could be a stationary turret option. Not sure which line could accommodate that best.
