2016 Lead up to the Trade Deadline thread

My underlying point doesn't even have anything to do with the state of defencemen in our prospect pool: let's just try and get along. Everyone has a different level of fandom, all levels of fandom are welcome.

You're the best.

I get frustrated reading comments on Reddit, newspaper columns, and other TML blogs, because there is a type of urgency for immediate satisfaction in the bulk of their stances. There's some gold nuggets hiding in there too from serious fans who have been tracking the Leafs a long time and have weathered their fair share of disappointment.

I like this group here, for our various views on the team. It wouldn't be much of a community if everyone espoused the same things all the time.

In any case, I am very interested in this upcoming trade deadline. Even more so than last year's which closely followed that permission to rebuild announcement.

I'm actually not particularly excited about this year's deadline. Kessel and Phaneuf are already gone and last year the Leafs proved they're actually sticking to the plan.

I'd be surprised, but interested, if Bozak or Lupul are dealt, but I'm not too optimistic about either. The rest will be mostly 3rd+ picks with perhaps a 2nd coming back for Parenteau.

I am still clinging to my JVR for Trouba trade.

I am wondering if the Leafs are going to move Reimer to WPG...

Since he's from the province of Manitoba, it would be a homecoming of sorts for him.

They already have Pavelec and 2 younger goalies both better than Pavelec, I don't see a fit there.

7. Quote of the Week: ?If Toronto acquires a right-hand shot defenceman who can make a good pass on the power play, go nuts,? one coach said. Wonder what he?s referring to?

Trouba to Toronto? The Return of Franson? Stamkos from the Left Dot? Wouldn't mind Vatanen either.

19. Since the Maple Leafs pumped up Dion Phaneuf before trading him, the conspiracy theories are out in full force that Nazem Kadri could be next. Both GM Lou Lamoriello and coach Mike Babcock have waxed poetic on the young centre at different times. The sense I get is that Toronto will not rush with Kadri or James van Riemsdyk, another player with legit value and a good contract. They have time with these players. Kadri is under team control until July 2018, while van Riemsdyk has two years remaining on his deal. There?s definitely been interest in him.

27. [...] By the way, Toronto fans are not happy Montreal got everything for its 100th anniversary while Los Angeles got All-Star and the draft went to Chicago for theirs. At the NBA All-Star Game, I ran that by a Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment exec who said, ?When everything is announced, it will all make sense.?

*tinfoil cap on* Perhaps the league has decided to award the Leafs the Draft Lottery as a Centennial present. It would surely bolster NHL profits tremendously for many years. They would've rigged it for McDavid, but then it'd only be the 99th anniversary. Seeing as how that was Gretzsky's number, so it was only fitting to send the Next One to Edmonton.

I was actually anticipating Pavalec coming this way for WPG's money reasons but deleted it as I was getting a head of myself.

That would allow Ladd to be moved to NYI for Hamonic.  I feel that Hamonic and JVR would most likely be around 60% the cap hit of Trouba and Ladd.

Taking on Pavalec's contract for a year to get a RH dman the age of Rielly is worth it in my books if it helps close the deal with WPG.

Combined with the Phaneuf deal and Hunwick/Winnik contracts, that would give the Leafs a few expiring UFA deals next February as well.

NYI is going to want more than a rental for Hamonic.

Just as an aside since Hamonic's name has been mentioned.

Is there anyone else that finds some of the potential trades being suggested for Hamonic as fairly laughable? I mean the guy is good, but some of the talking heads on tv and radio have been proposing deals where he returns blue-chip prospects and even 1st rounders.

I compared him to Jake Gardiner since they are both the same age, Gardiner has put up more pts per game at 5v5 and if you look at their corsi I believe over their career Hamonic is 0.4% better CF% 5v5 over their careers.

Gardiner has outperformed him in my eyes and done so on a significantly worse team and yet up until maybe the turn of this year if you'd have suggested any of the returns that are being suggested for Hamonic, for Gardiner, you'd be laughed out of whatever room you where in.

It's crazy how much the media narrative shapes the perceived value of a player.

It's worse than that even. I mentioned it in a GDT a while back where Cox and Friedman were mentioning possible Hamonic trades to Calgary or Edmonton where the players going the other way would be Hamilton or Eberle.

That said, I don't think it's a function of a media driven narrative. I think it more has to do with what NYI is actually asking for and the extent to which the league thinks they're legit. It's probably not a surprise that he hasn't been dealt yet.

I'm with you. I had a debate with someone last year who said that Hamonic was a #1 defenceman. I thought that was just nuts. He's a good defenceman, no doubt, but a #1? I'm not convinced he's a top pairing guy on a Cup contender. He's an excellent 2nd pairing guy, maybe a #2 in the right situation. But a #1? No way.

I don't think that Hamonic is even a #2 on NYI.  He is atleast #3 behind Boychuk and Leddy.  He could possibly be #4 but I haven't seen many NYI games this year.

I agree more with the notion that NYI is asking a CRAZY price for Hamonic not that his asking price reveals his value.

Some chatter about a CGY and TOR hookup, because a lot of high-end execs have been to Cgy games, recently (Dubas, Hunter, Morrison).

The obvious position of trade would be goalies. We could take back chunky salary for next year in exchange for prospects and picks. Who's a good bet? Kylington? One of their many goalie prospects?

But both teams are bad. Why would they give up prospects/picks?

EDIT: Oh god look at Burke's hair. That needs to be a photoshop battle on Reddit.

I can see the Flames believing that, if they get quality goaltending, they can still make the playoffs. Also, if they can dump a salary commitment - like Wideman or Raymond - I'm sure they'd be happy about it.
