2016 Lead up to the Trade Deadline thread

JVR + Cowen for Bickell, 1st, 2nd and Teravainen?

The Hawks picks are probably close to the worst in each round, hence the addition of the 2nd.

Yeah, that's the one. TT please.

The deal is probably pretty fair, but I don't see the Hawks adding anyone with a contract that extends past this season (outside of someone like Cowen and his buyout cap credit).

It's almost a wash in terms of salary for next year between JVR and Bickell (since BB has another year on his deal). I would think if Chicago didn't want him beyond this year, they could flip a 26-year-old JVR, with 2 more years at $4.25M, for a tidy little return at the draft. That would help recoup that 1st and 2nd they'd give up this year, and keep him off the cap

Maybe, but my guess is they'd rather pay a little less for someone with an expiring contract, so they don't have to worry about being in a situation where the deals they're being offered for JvR in the summer also involves them taking salary back. They're not in a great position in terms of the cap - to the point where I expect them to pay someone to take Bickell off their hands with little or no cap going back.

^ I'd be keen on that too. What realistically could we get for taking Bickell off of them without giving up any other useful assets? A second + decent prospect if we include Cowan?

Not exactly sure that Kevin McGran is the guy I trust getting my scoops from, but he had this in his latest article:

The Leafs kicked the tires on Bickell ? who may be finished as an NHLer ? and are waiting to hear back from Chicago. The 29-year-old power forward has one year left on a deal with an average cap hit of $4 million (U.S.), which is hurting the Blackhawks? cap situation. He?s in the minors, and $3.05 million still counts against the cap. The Leafs would take him ? they can easily afford him ? if there was something else in it for them. Depending on what the Blackhawks want to do, they might just be desperate enough to sweeten the deal. If the Hawks move him, it means they have something else up their sleeve.

To Bickell's credit, he has 23 points in 25 AHL games this season. That surprised me. Rockford isn't exactly a very high scoring team either, none of their other forwards are even close to point-per-game numbers.

Maybe it's just me but I'd be shocked if that sort of deal yielded anything other than a mid-round pick.

Which, admittedly, seems right up the Leafs' alley.

Yeah. I wouldn't expect more than a 3rd rounder.

Maple Leafs Hot Stove did a rumor compilation this morning. Other than the Bickell/McGran chatter, here are the bullets:

Friedman:
*  PAP likely next to move
*  Arizona, Calgary, San Jose potential destinations for Reimer

Friedman AMA: ?I wonder about Nazem Kadri? Who do the blues target? Especially with Steen out, the sputtering offense can?t be expected to resurge suddenly in the final 20 games of the season. Friedman: I?d be very curious to see Kadri in a STL uniform. And who are some unlikely players you could see getting traded at the deadline? Friedman: I do think we will get one bombshell no one sees coming. [?] I also wonder about Nazem Kadri.

I,m in the camp that Kadri should be moved,if they can get A level prospects for him.

4. I did a Reddit Hockey AMA on Monday and mentioned a curiosity to see Nazem Kadri in a Blues uniform. This was after I spoke to Armstrong, and before hearing Toronto assistant GM Kyle Dubas and Director of Pro Scouting Dave Morrison were on the list for San Jose/St. Louis Monday night.

Let?s not jump to conclusions, as it?s hard to know if anything actually is going on. There was a sense a year ago the Blues had interest, but it didn?t seem to go far. I remember thinking at the time he could be a great player surrounded by that team.

The Leafs have time on their side with Kadri. They can wait if they don?t get what they want.

Echoing what Lamoriello said, "When you have time, take it."

This is just more of ol gard thinking, lets trade away one of our top prospects for something, exaclty like Steen and what did we get there. To me Kadri is a prime example of someone, like Rielly and hopefully Gardiner that you rebuild around.  And to sell Reimer over Bernier is beyond me as well. Reimer is the perfect guy to help mentor the kid prospects.

With all the recent moves and the deadline only a few days away, I thought it would be a good idea to update the theoretical status list of the current roster:

The Untouchable (not moving)
Morgan Rielly

The Children Are the Future (not likely to move)
Leipsic
Leivo
Loov
Percy
Corrado

The "Our Time is Now" (current potential core pieces - only moved for really good return)
Kadri
Gardiner

The Damaged Goods (could theoretically be moved, depending on how close they are to returning)
Bozak
Lupul
Hunwick
Michalek
Robidas
Horton
JvR

The Maybe Next Years (One more season under contract)
Winnik
Greening
Bernier

The "Pack Your Bags" Gang (Pending UFAs with value who are not likely to be back with the Leafs)
Parenteau
Reimer
Arcobello
Grabner
Boyes

The Unique Situation
Cowen

The Who Knows? (Younger guys that may or may not be kept around)
Holland
Froese
Marincin

The Stranger Things Have Happened (Guys who have little/no value)
Clune
Torres

Sweet list, busta.

Just to add to that,
per David Conte via Mike Zeisberger's article:
?Lou looked to have his teams divided into three chunks ? one-third veterans, one-third players in their prime, one-third youngsters,? Conte said during a phone interview Monday. ?That seemed to be the recipe for a successful chemistry.

Obviously Hunwick's injury makes him a difficult case but he's someone along with Winnik where I'd be out there shopping him pretty hard despite the extra year on their contracts. I think they're dependable enough performers in their limited roles that the extra year makes them more valuable.

I was just about to write up a post about Hunwick. I also think that based on performance his value will never be higher. Babcock's playing him like a top pairing guy (of course nobody would actually view him as that), and I don't see that continuing next season.

The problem with Winnik is that, well, he hasn't been very good this season. Maybe he's a guy who just performs better in a contract year.
