2017-2018 NHL Thread

What does Auston Matthews benefit from waiting an extra year in junior/Europe under that circumstance.  Unless you make an exemption rule where all drafted players are ineligible for junior hockey forcing guys to opt out of Major Junior Hockey but also allowing 18 year olds to enter the draft.

I've heard about compromises like no age limits on the first round but for any other picks it's 19+ or even something like you can draft an 18 year old but, if you do, they have to be on your roster all year. That would allow in your obvious McDavid/Matthews types but keep guys who wouldn't be in the NHL anyway out of it.

Still, I just don't see why anyone would support the league and PA telling these adults(young adults but still) when they can earn a living.

I expected this to be awful but it was actually pretty good. And if that bit at the end was a fun shot at Matthews then I'm honestly impressed.

Duchene: ?Whatever jersey I?ll be wearing come training camp I?ll be wearing, and I?ll be the best I can be for that team.?

6. We?ll do more stuff from the media tour in a little bit, but let?s look at some of the other current storylines. Sounds like Pittsburgh has re-ignited its search for another centre. Not sure about names. Have heard rumblings about Detroit?s Riley Sheahan, but not specific to the Penguins.

Paging Tyler Bozak. Paging Tyler Bozak. Please make your way to the General Manager's office. Tyler Bozak to the General Manager's office.

Also lols at Andreas Athanasiou and David Pastrnak impasses.

I liked this one best:
23. Mark Scheifele with some great insight into Sidney Crosby and how that affects Scheifele?s own approach. ?Sid does it consistently. He makes the same play over-and-over again. He creates so many chances by being consistent for his linemates.? What does ?being consistent for your linemates? mean?

?Obviously Sid likes certain areas on the ice. He likes that back post, clearly guys know he?s there. Through the neutral zone, he does certain things over and over. They know where he?s going, they know his reads. That?s what chemistry is. They know his reads, they know what he?s thinking. Obviously, Sid is at a different level the way he thinks the game, but being consistent for everyone around you helps everyone be the best player that they can. When they get stuck in a situation it?s not like, ?Where is everyone?? It?s like, ?Sid?s right there.?

I love it. Also, very very likely a shot at Matthews.

McDavid definitely has a bit more personality than his on-camera persona suggests:

https://theathletic.com/99902/2017/09/12/lebrun-overlooked-superstar-scheifele-ready-for-national-spotlight/

It was November last season when Scheifele was actually leading the NHL in scoring when he got his favourite text message of the year.

?I got a text from Connor saying, ?Hey, can you slow down?' ? laughs Scheifele. ?I was like, ?Are you kidding? You?re going to catch me any night.' And obviously he did. And I returned the message back when he went on his tear, saying ?Hey, you mind slowing down a little bit?' That was pretty cool.?

Apparently I missed something.  Did Matthews do something in the past that McDavid is alluding to?  Might it be something to do with whatever McDavid has in his hand (which I can't make out)

Thanks for clearing that up.  I love that photo with Matthews holding a purple fidget spinner

One of his instagram posts earlier in the summer had him holding one and Marner chirped him a little for it. Guessing that probably spread around the NHL guys.

A very good article about the new Detroit arena and it's economic impact on the city:

http://jalopnik.com/the-motor-city-is-making-a-bull#$#%-bet-on-sports-1803755493

Especially relevant today with the "news" that the Flames have publicly announced they're no longer going to try to work out a deal with the city for a new arena.

Broken link.  Tried it last night and this morning and both times it didn't work.

The auto-swear filter on the forum nerfed the poop part of the url.

The forum isn't a fan of the links language ;)

Copy and paste the link into your address bar and take a good guess as to what follows "bull" instead of "#$#%".

Thanks for the tip.  Had to remove the /tag/ too for it to work (for those interested and having trouble).

Tax dollars, I don't know. Obviously there is economic spin off from having NHL team but you would like to think an established NHL team shouldn't require tax dollars to operate. Are they loosing money? How much has their investment appreciated? Hard to feel bad for the owner's. I hope they can figure it out without being to greedy.

Are the Flames losing money? Probably not. But the also probably don't make as much money as one would expect. According to Forbes, the Flames made $18m for the 2015-2016 season.

I think it's important to remember that government subsidies are given to many businesses (https://www.fraserinstitute.org/sites/default/files/government-subsidies-in-canada-a-684-billion-price-tag(1).pdf). Few are in the public spotlight like a professional sports team. Teams can have a very positive impact on a local economy and justify a subsidy (at least in relation to other businesses that receive subsidies). Here is an example of what one player, LeBron James, has had on Cleveland's economy:  (http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2015/02/lebron_james_cleveland_economi.html)

It would be foolish for the Flames to build an arena on their own, especially when another city would give them financial incentive to move. It's important for the city of Calgary not to pay too much, but it makes sense to get a deal done.

It's become unpopular to give public money to sports teams, and cities have been burned in the past. But really this has more to do with the upcoming election and a mayor trying to retain his job.

I'd imagine after the election a deal will get done with the city, or the Flames will move. Simple as that.
