Oilers press conference at 3pm.  Most likely the McDavid signing, let's see where the number lands...

McKenzie is saying it might be around 12.25 rather than 13.25.

12.5 is the official number

So he took a "big" 750k discount...meh

That $750,000 X 8 years is $6m bucks!

I'm just looking at the cap implications.  750k on the cap isn't that big a "discount" from the original number that was floating out there.  Is that the difference for them in signing Draisaitl to what he wants?  "OK Leon, we can throw on an additional 750k for you!"

Has the Winnipeg JVR thing been completely nixed yet?

I was thinking that the Kulikov signing is likely to push someone out of top 4 minutes there...they didn't pay him $4mil to play in the bottom pairing, right?

There's a Winnipeg / JVR thing?

No, but many were figuring out a way to try to pry Trouba out of there...I assume any trade package scenarios moving forward will include JVR or Bozak.

I'd love to know whether or not the criticism of his high cap hit (particularly from the Edmonton media) forced him to come down on it a little bit.

And just to expand on this...

Ehlers - Scheifele - Laine
JVR - Little - Wheeler

And they've got the cap space...

Galchenyuk 3x$4.9 Million.

After Radulov fled for Dallas, they certainly couldn't afford to move him anymore.

We are talking Bergevin here.  A 3 yr contract to Gally basically means he gave him a long enough deal so that teams that want to acquire him know what contract they have for the next few years.  I bet he's not a Hab by this time next year.

Grigorenko's signed a 3-year deal in Russia. See ya!

*deletes all references to me desperately wanting the Leafs to draft him in 2012*

It's certainly a very tradeable contract, but if they trade him now they're selling low and won't get equal value back.  They're gonna need him to bounce back and provide offense in addition to Drouin.  If he has a decent year though I could see Bergevin moving on from him at the trade deadline.

If Tavares gets shopped then I could definitely see the Habs offering something revolving around Galchenyuk.

All depends on where the Islanders are during the season and if Tavares feels they're competitive.  He could pull a Stamkos and decide to almost go to UFA to see what his options are.

Actually people are saying that a bigger issue there is the Islanders and their arena situation and that Tavares is reluctant to commit long term without knowing where he'll actually be playing.

Which, if true, seems unlikely to be resolved soon.

That may well be, but a winning atmosphere convinces a lot of people.  If the Islanders are a good team this season and in playoff contention it may convince him that happier days are ahead.

Again, this isn't dissatisfaction with the way things are going with the team. Winning can convince people of a lot of things but if Tavares doesn't know where the Franchise will be in a couple of years then winning doesn't change that.

Especially with the idea of Quebec City being the natural landing place if the Islanders leave New York then, no, I don't think the Islanders having a good season makes that go away.

The Lightning re-signed Tyler Johnson to a 7 year/35 million dollar deal.

He's not coming off the best couple of years and I don't really think he's a 70+ point player the way he was a couple of years ago but that's still a very team friendly deal for a guy signing away all of his best UFA deals.

Either way, I'm just glad that we live in a world where the NHL decided that state income tax laws and proximity to nice golf courses are advantages teams can exploit while being very rich because of a large and dedicated fan base isn't.

How pissed should Kucherov be?

Kucherov will be up in a couple of years, so he'll get his 26 year old contract then.

Seems Yzerman likes these contracts to be up at ~26 years old.

It's Palat that I'm wondering about.

This is something that I wish was addressed in any cap league.  Salaries should maybe be considered post-tax to account for this stuff.  You can't account for every thing (real estate costs, proximity other services, etc.) but taxes seems like an easy one.

If you have to pay an extra million dollars to match take home salaries, why is that considered reasonable.
