2017 Off-season Trades/Signings Discussion

Can we still cross our fingers for Marleau?

Marleau seemed like the more likely team anyway based on the media reports. I'd have preferred Thornton, and would have paid Marleau more if it meant we got Joe too. So we'll have to see what happens there. Marleau is apparently really pushing for 3 years.

TSN oddly took about 15 minutes to mention that Thornton report. They weren't really talking about anything noteworthy in the meantime.

Since it was only coming from one guy initially, I suspect they waited to get texts back from additional sources.

Well, so far our Leafs Navigators have taken us on a big, fat cruise on the S.S. Underwhelming.
Perfect IMO, there was nothing out there available to be even whelmed with. Two decent depth guys added, both known as classy guys with lots of experience. Save the cash for the kids. Just need a right-handed D to fit into top four and then were down for the summer IMHO. Or that piece could even be added prior to season opening, once they get a look at everyone in training camp. They have more than enough forward depth to make a deal at any time for that. They may want to get Brown and Hyman under contract first to see what they are going to spend contract wise on the 4th d-man.

I'm pretty sure they still need to sign Burakovsky, Grubauer and fill several other spots and have about 4.5 million to do it.

Do they punt Ovechkin?

I'd gladly take Orlov or Carlson off their hands, if they need to free up some room. Not sure they would move Ovie...

Yeah, that's a tough one. Usually in situations like these there's an obvious candidate to be traded to make room, but there's really nobody that stands out here. Orpik I guess but who takes on that deal? I guess Johansson? I really don't get why they re-signed Oshie.

Amen, it also opens them up for a predatory offer sheet on Burakovsky.

They're not exactly apples to apples but this is a deal that might maybe be a domino falling in the "If McDavid is worth X then 3rd tier guys are worth Y" chain that will inform the Marner/Nylander deals.

They just traded Johansson to NJ.
