2017 Off-season Trades/Signings Discussion

Given the delay in signing, I wonder if he  as prepared to leave some of that on the table had Marleau signed.

Seems like that's more or less the case:

They're not exactly apples to apples but this is a deal that might maybe be a domino falling in the "If McDavid is worth X then 3rd tier guys are worth Y" chain that will inform the Marner/Nylander deals.

Yeah, this came in a lot higher than I thought. Especially since he was coming off a bit of a "down" year with just 59 points (scored 77 the season before that). He is 25 years old though so this contract will eat up a lot more UFA years than our big-3 contracts will need to. Still waiting to see what Pastrnak gets.

edit: I'd love to know what kind of long-term contract options Washington might have explored with him in the 2015 offseason when they bridge'd him instead. He had basically just played 1 full NHL season at that point and scored 37 points in 80 games, but everyone seemed to know he was destined to break out (which he did the next season when he scored 77).

Brian McLellan has been a pretty savvy GM these past few years.

What happen?

Was there a team that fumbled their expansion draft plan more than the Caps? And then followed it up with an ill-advised UFA signing that precipitated trading out a very useful player for two and a half magic beans?

I think there are two things there. One, I sort of agree with the idea that losing Johansson/Ellen is preferable to Schmidt but I think constantly pointing out that you didn't get much for Johannson doesn't take into account the fairly obvious question of "If Johannson is such a valuable player, why could they only get a hill of beans for him?". I agree that the idea that signing Kuznetsov meant they had to move money wouldn't have come as a surprise to them but if so, isn't it fair to say they probably didn't trade him in a panic and then doesn't what Johansson got indicate that's roughly what he was worth?

Second, and I guess this is sort of a side thing, but I think on the latest Marek v Wyshynski podcast they raised a fairly interesting question re: the Oshie deal. Namely that giving him 8 years seems like such a questionable choice by such an otherwise reasonable organization that it almost makes you think there's a certain confidence there that something is going to come out of the next CBA that will result in that sort of deal not being actually on the books for the bad years of it.

I heard that too: planning for the compliance buyout and salary rollback party.

Oilers press conference at 3pm.  Most likely the McDavid signing, let's see where the number lands...

McKenzie is saying it might be around 12.25 rather than 13.25.

12.5 is the official number

He probably could have insisted on 15M, what would the Oilers have done?

Blink twice if you're being held hostage, Connor.

I guess Matthews could come in at 4.25M/8 years, yeah?

I'll show you what it means to sign a home-town discount Connor!

(Matthews then signs a 200M marketing contract)

Interesting...

That he filed for arbitration means he can't be offer sheeted, correct?

Don't ask me hard questions.

Players that have elected to go to salary arbitration cannot be given an offer sheet, though there are a few days to get one if they wait to the deadline to file.
