2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

Jays could have Vlad Jr. and Bo Bichette playing SS and 3B for years to come so a bit of an interesting pick in the draft. Personally, I think Vlad Jr. will start his career at 3B and transition to 1B in later years.
Not that you can put much if any stock into these draft rankings but Groshans was reportedly ranked 31st and yet the Jays took him 12th...time will tell on this decision.

The Jays had their sights set on Groshans before the draft.  They believe that with time, he'll grow to be a good power hitter.

Blue Jays' Scouting Director Steve Sanders had this to say:
"We knew early on that Jordan was somebody that we were going to be interested in dating back as far as last summer and even a little bit before that, and he's somebody we've watched closely. As that timeline evolves we've had a lot of guys on our staff not only go see him play but spend time with him off the field, getting to know him.

"It's a long process but one that was certainly very thorough."

Shades of a young JD?

Yea I wouldn't put too much stock into these rankings. You have to look at slot, $ pool available, signability etc. That's why you see guys like Liberatore, who was ranked 4th, drop to a pool rich team like TB at 16th, or Singer, ranked 2, dropping to 18th. There were also multiple guys drafted in the 1st round who were ranked outside of it. A lot of this is tactical and can allow for better picks in later rounds.

Anyway I do have to say that I like that this front office keeps adding position players. Pitchers (especially HS ones) are so hard to predict and need so much development that I'd rather take a stab at them a little later on in the draft and in FA and what not.

Also in case anyone was wondering, Jays drafted LH OF Griffin Conine with their second round (52) pick (ranked 50, was a projected 1st rounder earlier in the year). He's the son of a former MLB'er because that seems to be a pre-requisite for this team now ;)

Jays look different, nice start by Estrada and good defense, what gives?

Nope, same old Jays...

Yea with Gibby forced to use Oh, Loup and Biagini in high leverage situations.  On top of the struggles with some hitters and the pitching losing Osuna really hurt

Yea losing Osuna and seeing Axford, Clippard and Oh turn to gas cans hasn't been easy. I'm still not sure why Loup faces RH hitters and/or pitches in high leverage situations but, like you said, Gibby has his hand kind of forced here.

Starting pitching hasn't been there this year other than Happ, but Estrada and Gaviglio put up back to back great starts against the Yankees and the end result is still 2 losses.
Frustrating, just like most of this lost season!
Gibby's job has never really been in danger to this point, but he may now become the scapegoat if things don't improve somewhat in the near future.

The worst team in the Major Leagues right now, the lowly Baltimore Orioles (19-42), pay a visit to the Rogers Centre for a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays (26-35).

With this series, the Jays have a chance to do some damage hopefully winning as many of these four games as they can.  If they succumb the other way to these Orioles, then....nevermind.  Expecting nothing short of a Jays series near sweep.

LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!

Major League Baseball recently released its official report investigating the source of last season?s home run surge.  The independent committee concluded that the cause was the ball itself?specifically, a decrease in the ball?s drag coefficient. However, they were unable find the reason for this change.

After taking apart and examining twenty-six baseballs, not only have I found a possible explanation for the decrease in drag, but one that could also account for the recent spike in pitcher blister injuries.

From the author, Dr. Meredith Wills:
It was 26 baseballs. For a larger study, I?d probably get help, but this was just me. As for my background, I have PhD in Astrophysics and a previous career doing research for NASA. I also have a fair bit of experience disassembling baseballs, as I?ve been using the yarn inside them for years to knit fundraising pieces for the Hall of Fame. This just took that skill set and applied it to a scientific study.

Interesting. It made me wonder... are there any differences between how a hockey puck was manufactured say 50 years ago vs. how it is today?

Remember the FOX network glowing pucks?  They had sensors added to them to make that technology work.  And I believe the NHL wants to have trackers in the pucks next year to provide more data for analytics, so they'll have to be different from even the ones they were using this year.

As for the pucks we buy at crappy tire to use at the rink ourselves, that is a good question also.

I have to imagine that, at the very least, the process has become more efficient. Not sure how much impact it would have on the puck itself in comparison to a baseball, since we're looking at a single piece of rubber rather than a multi-layer ball.

I think hockey?s major differnence hasn?t been the goalie equipment. The pads being able to rotate outward around the leg when going down in butterfly vs being locked in place in front of the leg (forcing a standup style).

Solo home runs by Russell Martin & Kevin Pillar, plus a triple by Teoscar Hernandez (his fifth of the year), including some fine fielding by Randall Grichuk, combined to lead the Blue Jays to a 5-1 win over Baltimore Friday.

Jays' starter J.A.Happ continued his mastery in allowing only one run (unearned) on two hits in going seven innings, for his 100th career win.  Seunghwan Oh & Ryan Tepera were solid in relief.

For the first time since April 29 had the Blue Jays won back-to-back wins.  Sure feels good especially considering  the fact that the rotarion enjoyed it's fifth straight quality start this year not seen since September 2016.

Wow the Jays have a three game win streak going.  It's against the worst team in baseball, but still, signs of life.  If they can extend the streak to ten games or so they could make things more interesting this season.  We'll see.

I think it's 90/10 they are just playing pretenders, there's way too many holes in this team for them to take a serious run at it.  I mean barring a trade that will shore up the pen and another very good bat it's going to be difficult to get back in the race.  Atkins should be preparing to trade just about every veteran on the team.  The only players from the 25 man roster that I would keep are:

Stroman
Sanchez
Osuna
Teoscar

Everyone else should be on the block.

Happ/JD could get us a a few top prospects and maybe even a major league ready one, same with Smoak and possibly Pillar.
