2018 Toronto Blue Jays General Season Thread

What would this qualifying offer look like?

It would be a one year deal at the average annual value of the top 125 contracts in MLB. For this past season, that was $17.4M. So, probably around $18M this time around.

Thanks for that...I can see your point then.

Speaking of guys that are always injured, what's up with Tulo and Travis?

Tulo has been out all year, he had surgery to remove bone spurs from both heels. No timetable for a return.

Travis was very poor in April and was sent down to Buffalo. Came back and was good in the last couple weeks of May, slightly below average in June and very good in July. He has been healthy all season though.

I'm just not sure what the Jays vision is. I guess it seems to be a case of wait for Vlad Jr and Bichette etc to be ready and hope

Huh...I was at Happ's final start against the Orioles, and I honestly didn't think Travis played.  Turns out I wasn't paying attention, but the kids were distracting me the whole time, in my defense.

He came in as pinch runner in the 8th and was on base when Solarte hit the winning home run.

The return on Happ is pretty disappointing especially when trading within the division.  I?m not sure how much more value he really held but getting a Solarte as best case infielder when we have 3-4 infielders pushing upward through the system seems disappointing.  Would have liked to have seen a pitching prospect involved in a few of these trades.

The Jays asking price was quite high initially.  They were looking for a prospect -- Clint Frazier -- but obviously the Yankees refused to let go of either of Frazier or Sheffield.  It's the best outcome the Jays could get (in Drury & McKinney).
They are "major-league ready" and Drury may be in the lineup against the White Sox.

Should Happ make a return to the Jays, he could be affordable and sign up again for a three-year contract.  A big if, since J.A.Happ has professed his love for the city and had said that he wouldn't want to play anywhere else, but understood the situation the club was in.  A classy fellow, Happ, no doubt.

Wishing him all the success in New York.

C.B. Bucknor continues to show why he is among the worst umpires in baseball. He completely lost count of balls and strikes in Gurriel's AB in the 8th. Should have had a walk, full credit to Gurriel to rip a double later in the AB!

The umpires union is absurd that they protect fools like Bucknor.

Is this not true of most unions? Protect the weak?

Unions spend 90% of their time and resources protecting 10% of their membership.

Most unions extend certain protections to all members. It's sort of implicit in the word.

Also, not that it's conclusive but based on what data I could find Bucknor doesn't seem to be near the bottom of the league in calls overturned on review.

I am a little taken back by how sensitive the media has been regarding their alleged mistreat from Stroman. Aren't these guys pros and are suppose to brush this stuff off. Listening to both TSN and Sportsnet radio it has become common place to rip on Stroman's character. He's a kid with a big personality and has an edge, give him a break. Reminds me of the way Bautista rubbed so many the wrong way with his swagger.

There those out there who obviously detest Stroman's smart-alecky behaviour, if one wants to call it that.  He has been known to rub on some teammates (particularly after a bad outing by that player, or a loss of sorts of/in a game), plus he's outspoken not afraid to speak his mind, questioning team decision-making, etc.

I take the above to mean that Stroman is a very intensely competitive player, for want of a better description, and is equally committed to playing well & teamwise.  As he matures, he'll probably wind it down a bit and pick his battles a little more carefully.

He is signed until 2020, and there have been rumours of teams interested in Stroman's services, (the Yankees, for one, before they traded for Happ), but it looks highly unlikely the Jays will trade him at this point.

It's good to see Stroman getting his groove back on the mound after an awful start to his season.

As for the media, well, let's not forget Stroman always makes for an interesting talking point.  If it gets viewers'/listeners' attention, so be it.  Non-conformists always elicit some greater form of either admiration or dislike. There isn't much that comes in between.

Not only that, but do any of us really know any facts in this case? I'm not sure why anyone can definitively say he deserves another chance when they don't even know what happened.

Exactly. None of us know what actually happened so there's really no rush to take a stance on Osuna's worthiness of a second chance.

It's not the first time Highlander has staked out that position re: Osuna. Like I said, I don't get it at all

Atkins said today that he will be back with the Jays after his suspension. So he is getting the second chance.

And that, kids, is why we don't always take press statements as literal truth.
