2019-2020 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I would have guessed the last time the Leafs had 3 All-Star reps would have been in the Sundin era, but it actually happened in 2012 when Kessel, Lupul, and Phaneuf went.

That was practically a home game though and we all know the league usually sends an extra player in that case.

Phaneuf was voted in that year! Like, Leaf fans actively made an effort to get him into the game!

Maybe we should sign him for the stretch run!!! Kidding...

Ah that makes sense, his stats really didn't seem very ASG-y.

Remembering that Phaneuf was once very popular here is weird.

I'd like to thank the NHL for not scheduling a Leaf game on a Saturday night in January.  Of all months, no game on a Saturday night in January.  Because I've got so much stuff on the go on Saturday nights in January.

And I refuse to watch Sunday hockey games.  It's just wrong.

Assured good ratings: Leafs on Sat nite.  Who needs it? quoth The Bettman.

I'm not sure which aspect of this take I like better, the idea that the gigantic multi-year TV contracts the league signs are significantly affected by the two or three times a year the Leafs don't play on Saturday nights or the idea that Bettman is being presented with a more profitable schedule and turning it down.

The league would like every single one of their games on at the most opportune times. Sadly, they don't get to unilaterally impose their desired schedule onto these arenas.

I'll sit back while you tell me what event is more profitable than a Leafs game on a January Saturday night at the SBA.

Could it be ... this?

Must be a case where the gigantic multi-year lacrosse TV contract got  priority.

Enter Sandman

The @MapleLeafs have recalled defenceman Rasmus Sandin from the @TorontoMarlies (AHL). #LeafsForever

Presumably, if he plays, he'll be replacing Marincin. I didn't expect that to happen when him and Holl were on the shutdown pairing but since Marincin is playing with Ceci now that swap makes a lot more sense. Someone will still need to step up to take his PK minutes though.

He's also 4 games away from burning the first year of his ELC.

Yeah. If he gets into more than a game or two, I have to imagine he?s here to stay.

I'm still skeptical about where he'll fit when Muzzin returns, but we'll see I guess. I imagine Jake might be ready to return after the bye-week/ASG, so that gives Sandin 3 games right there.

It could also simply be a cup-of-coffee reward for being patient, get in a few practices with the big club, and a chance to watch a bit from the press box.

Barring a trade, he'll probably go back to the Marlies. They can't keep him or Marincin as a 7th without moving one of the 13 forwards and that would mean waivers for someone up front, of course assuming Moore is healthy. Marchment and Brooks will be heading down also. Who knows, maybe we'll see a trade??

I think this ^.  Dubas has to do something and the last game just underlines it.  Twice.

Missed the game. Did Rielly go down at some point? He still played 21 minutes.

I'm just speculating, but if the Leafs basically decide to shut him down for this week to give him 2 weeks off with the break that wouldn't be the worst idea. It's only 3 games, 2 of which are against bottom-10 teams. Might be worth it.

Our players are starting to drop like flies. We've lost our two best defensemen at this point. What do we do going forward? Do we trade Johnsson/Kappy to try and acquire something else?

I don't think you get nearly enough return for even Kappy + Mango to be replacement level of either one of our missing D. I think you call up Sandin and cross your fingers that he can handle NHL minutes, that Dermott can up his game, and that Muz is back soon. If we can tread water a bit, we might survive.

Yeah really depends on what Muzzin's timeline is now. All we ever got was "week-to-week". After the ASG it'll be 4 weeks. If he's back by then or a little bit after then we're only talking about 3-5 more games.
