Eliotte Friedman, in an appearance on Tim & Sid, stressed the fact that both sides ? Gardiner and the Leafs ? both prefer each other over the other options that both parties have. In a perfect world, Gardiner would no doubt be a member of this team when training camp rolls around.

Carlton, where does this rank on the believability scale again?

I am bored at work, so here's the transcript:

There seems to be this prevailing thought, at least among Leaf fans, and this might just be wishful thinking, when Marner doesn't work out, Gardiner's sitting around waiting for that to happen. Is there any truth to that?

Friedman: Ah, I-- uh-- You know what? The one thing that-- I-- like-- Jake Gardiner loves Toronto, and I know the organization really likes him. They like him a lot. You know, the thing that I wonder about Gardiner is, if he is looking to increase his value, is he going to do it in Toronto? You know, he's not going to get as much power play time (they're going to have Rielly and Barrie), you know he's probably going to be a third pairing defenseman. If he's staying in Toronto, it is because he is-- really wants to be there.

You know, I've heard Arizona, I've heard both Montreal and Winnipeg, I've heard Buffalo if they move maybe Ristolainen out. Somebody said they heard rumours about potentially Carolina, depending on what the Hurricanes might still yet do.

I think there is interest in him. I think he's being picky, which is fine. That's certainly his prerogative -- he wants to go where he wants to go -- and I know there's talk that-- I just don't see, aside from he really wants to play there, I don't see how it benefits his marketability if he comes back to Toronto, 'cuz there won't be the opportunities to play as much as he has played in the past.

I'm sure both sides want to Gardiner on the Leafs, but everyone is realistic, and I doubt Gardiner is holding his breath for the Leafs. If Gardiner had a team offering him something considerable, he'd of signed with them.

All rules go out the window with bearded-Friedman. Anyway that blurb seems like a pretty loose interpretation of what Friedman actually said.

I will say though him saying that Winnipeg, Buffalo, and Arizona are 3 of the main teams who want to sign Gardiner sure explains why Jake hasn't made up his mind yet.

Well, it's a good thing the League locked the players out twice so that horrible tragedies like Gardiner being a Leaf can't happen.

I searched "Gardiner Devils" on twitter to see if there was any chatter about that and came across this gem of a tweet that I just had to share:

If they wanted Gardiner that bad, I think they would have let Ceci go to arbitration and then just walk away from him.

If only Gardiner was also RH and cost 4M

If you want a player, you do what you can to make it work.  It wouldn't be the first lefty Babs used on the right (be it him, or whichever lefty).

Gardiner the perfect example of a player who falls in the middle, to his detriment.  Dermott is younger, better value, and has the potential to replace a lot of what Gardiner brings.  Then they went out and got a RHD who is as good as or better offensively.  So they made Jake kind of doubly redundant.

I would much rather have Gardiner than Ceci, but as herman says, there are two obstacles in the way.

Ignoring the 4M part, if given the choice between

1. Rielly-Ceci
2. Gardiner-Rielly

Is there anyone who picks door #1 even with Rielly on his off wing?

(I do hope that ?off wing? describes Rielly?s usual position accurately.)

I'd pick 1 even if it might be foolish. I know what you get in Gardiner and I don't think he'd be a good fit with Rielly. I'd like to see Ceci away from the dumpster fire that is Ottawa and playing on pairing with Rielly.

History would suggest Babcock makes that choice.
