2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Spezza looks like he could play and contribute for a couple more years.

Thornton, gotta go. Simmonds - gotta go unless he signs a minimum contract and is content with platooning with some younger players. He can't be a fixture for another season.

Simmonds is a no-go for me even on a league minimum deal.  I didn't need offense from him in the postseason but we absolutely needed physicality and he did not bring that in the least.  The most memorable physical altercations he got into were getting hit hard by Montreal.

I don't agree to the extent that I thought he was a real positive physical presence in G2.  But otherwise, you're right, he did nothing at all.  Like him, but no way should they bring him back.

Along these same lines, I think we are now done trying to wring value out of wonderful ex-Sharks.

The MLHS postmorterm had some interesting things to say about Dermott (as in expose Holl, not him).  Dermott (like Rielly) was an unexpected bright spot in that debacle.  If he were a RHD I think it would change the whole thought process.

The thing is, Seattle can only take 1 player. Will they take Kerfoot or someone else before Dermott? Leafs have to find out who Seattle want and go from there. Leafs are stronger on the left side with Rielly, Muzz, Sandin already. I think Liljegren comes in next season as a regular.

This: Dubas and Keefe get one more year. Gotta lose Jumbo, Simmonds, Souperman, trade Rielly for a good return,  expose Holl in the draft, keep Dermott.  Hyman can stay at the same money.  Engvall is a keeper, so is Campbell but we need a 1-A, 1-B tandem and Freddo has to go.  Would be nice to get Seth Jones .
Sandin, Robertson and Joey Anderson all deserve some time.  The only old guy I would keep is Spezza.

I'm keeping Souperman. I know his offence is nothing to write home about but I think he bounces back in that department. He's also a very good defensive player that doesn't cost much. i would like to see Liljegren next year also. I think it's time for him. Freddie or similar at 3 mill max would be ok in my books on a short deal. Not sold on Jack being the guy. Not sure he can stay healthy enough.
What is a good return for Rielly? Who you giving up for Jones? I find it curious that this is the best defence we've had in years yet you have no issue getting rid of 2 of the top 4.

Well that's one contract done (after the expansion draft).

Great news.  I'd have no problem with the team signing him to 1-year contracts for as long as he is willing to play.  And then from there, transitioning into some sort of front office role.

He had a lot of jump this year, skated as if he was 10 years younger, was one of the few who gave a damn the entire 7-game series, and the 30 points he put up this year in the bottom six role he has now is a huge contribution from a 37-year old.

I could see moving Rielly if the return was decent. Then put Sandin and Lily in the lineup and let them play so they're ready for the playoffs.

I like Mikheyev, he's cheap, fast, very good defensively. Does he still have another level he can reach on offense? Is his wrist still an issue? Very similar story with Engvall. Is he a center or a winger? If he's a center maybe Kerfoot is expendable. Or is Kerfoot the guy who should play LW on line 2.

If the Leafs end up keeping Kerfoot on the team I really think they need to transition him more to a full-time winger who can fill in at centre as opposed to the other way around.

I was beating this drum LAST season.

I like Rielly, but I really think Sandin & maybe Dermott can cover most of what he does in terms of transitioning the play.  His good showing in the playoffs make it the perfect time to trade him for some more secondary scoring.  Then you have:

Sandin / Brodie
Muzzin / Holl or Liljegren
Bogosian / Dermott or Liljegren

For Liljegren, it's tine for the Leafs to fish or cut bait.  If they really believe in him like they say they do, put him the starting line-up most nights and see how he fares.

I don't have any problem with bringing back Spezza, arguably among the most-value-for-money 4th liners in the league.  We just need to recognize that he could fall off the Thornton/Marleau cliff at any time, at his age.

But you will only hpefully have 1 of them and not 3 like we did this season. Spezza will probably always be good at faceoffs and does have a shot, something Simmonds and Thornton seemed to be lacking.

He's not arguably among the most value for money players...he absolutely is.

At 23,333 dollars per point he's the 12th most cost-effective player in the league.  There is only one player above him who is not on an entry-level deal (Connor Garland in Arizona who signed a two year 775K deal)

Didn't he look faster this year? Spezza is definitely great value. Glad he wants to come back again.

To hell with that.  Make him player/coach from the get-go and put him in charge of damn faceoffs/PP.  All the best in your future endeavors, Manny.

I like Souperman a lot but he lost the scoring touch he had when his wrist was sliced, if they keep him I hope he can turn it around. Holl is not as good as Dermott in the long haul. Rielly is still worth something so trade him now, I can't see paying him or Hyman more money.  Thought Jones was a free agent, guess I was wrong.  I can see a D consisting of Muzzin-Brodie, Sandin-Dermott, somebody and Bogo.
I agree with you on Jack, may end up being 1-B but they need someone who can stop the soft goals in the playoffs.
