2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Completely agree. But let's face it... everybody is expecting a 1st round victory.

As they were last year, which is why it's foolish to make that mistake again.

The rest of that thought was less about expectations and more about...What are we left with if they don't?

The lineup spots where we can leverage some improvement with injured players coming off the shelf: 2LW, 3C, 3RW.

2LW: Kerfoot > Galchenyuk; Hyman > Kerfoot, Galchenyuk
3C: Nash > Kerfoot (defensively), Engvall
3RW: Hyman > Foligno > Simmonds, Engvall, Galchenyuk

I don't think anything fundamentally changes given the fairly random nature of the playoffs. You can make changes for change's sake or you can try and address why you lost in the playoffs and do your best to fix those elements of the roster within the confines of the cap.

But if they lose because their goaltending is a problem, which is absolutely possible, then we already knew that.

Hmmmm
Can't see them putting Hyman on LTIR now so there's no way Freddie is getting into a game for the Leafs this week. Looks like Foligno is on one of the top 2 lines and so is Hyman.

I make a distinction between expecting something and being overconfident that it will happen.  I expect the Leafs to beat the Habs, but at the same time your point is right on the mark, they have to prove they can win in the postseason so being overconfident is not warranted.  Some series going in are real toss-ups; others have a favorite.  The Leafs will be, and should be, favored to beat Montreal.  They could very well lose, for any number of reasons, but again as you say goaltending ? either for or against ? is the likeliest one.

I think maybe the distinction I'm making is between thinking something is more likely than not to happen and expecting it to happen. If I roll the dice I'm confident it's more likely to come up 7 than any other number but I certainly don't expect it to be 7.

Well I was close. If that 3rd line is being used as a checking unit then I think it needs Hyman or Foligno there. If it isn't being used as a checking unit then it probably doesn't have enough offence on it. Still time to move things around though so we'll see what happens.

Foligno wasn't putting up anymore points then Nash per 60 in CBJ. Anyway lots of people here think you don't need offence on that line. It's def a good looking shutdown line though. Lots of speed from Kerfoot and Mik. I honestly don't remember Nash as a player.

What's amazing is if you click on Foligno's face here, his expression never changes. Talk about consistency:

I think it's about getting Foligno, noted Swiss Army utility forward and older Hyman, some reps with all of the top 6 before the playoffs, and getting Nash's legs under him again. Kerfoot can be unleashed offensively, so to speak, with much of the defensive responsibility being covered by Nash and Mikheyev (reverse top-6 build). It gives all lines a carrier or two.

The old man line looks to be playing more of a bench mascot role that might wreck a matchup once in awhile with an OZ start; it'll be a huge boost if that line scores at any point.

I just watched the concentration of follicles migrate

Keefe said he wanted to get Foligno with Tavares before he got injured so now he'll the chance. Let's see what happens but it's nice to have usable options and not just warm bodies for hopefully a long run.

Friedman's 31 thoughts:

13. The Boston-Washington kicks off the playoffs on Saturday night. Canadian teams are expected to begin next Wednesday. It might just be me, but do the North Division playoff teams need to wait for Calgary and Vancouver? I can see Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg annoyed at waiting and getting a tougher schedule.

It?s going to be weird without many late-night games, as Vegas is only Pacific time-zone team in the post-season.

I think the league should just move forward with the North playoffs while Van and Cal are still playing regular season games.

I have no idea how this will work cap wise - Foligno, Hyman, Nash and Andersen all back at once?

Yes, it's gradations of plausibility and expectation, sprinkled in this case with a dash of hope/fear.

Yep, I'll give Pridham his due on this one but I don't see how you fit those guys under the cap.  That's going to be some exceptional fancy math if this one works out.

Have to think Hyman and Nash are just practicing but won't be "cleared". Or at least just Hyman.

edit, Hyman and Nash likely starting on LTIR:
