2020-2021 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

This is such a minor thing but I wonder why the sens didn't bring him back, even if it was just for their AHL team.

Maybe the player just wanted to be a Marlie rather than play in Belleville Ontario.

Maybe he wouldn't sign an AHL contract with Ottawa, as he didn't play a game for the AHL team last season.

Toronto probably provided more guaranteed money than Ottawa would.

It's kinda like Dubas has been on a two week bender and is gonna wake up one day and wonder what he's done. I love it [emoji23]

Season opener lineup? I always love the season opener lineup. No critical goalie/defensemen/center injuries yet.

Let?s get weird! But tactically interesting and quite workable with our roster.

Do we have enough PK guys?

Hyman - Marner
Kerfoot - Simmons?
Mikheyev - Thornton?

Thornton seems like he must be too slow to PK....though he does have that reach.

Barabanov PKs as well. Engvall and Anderson too if they are still in the lineup. I would not use Simmonds or Thornton in PK. Robertson is capable but probably not the ideal way to deploy a shooting threat rookie.

Vesey has some PK experience from the last 2 seasons as well, which might surprise some people. He's never been the first guy over the boards but he can probably hold his own for the final PK shift.

This looks dead-on to me.

EDIT: And probably the most talented Leafs lineup in recent memory. At least on paper. Can you imagine if Joe and Spez were both in their prime right now? I shutter to think of how good this team would be.

There's a lot of versatility there. I do think Plan A will be to start Kerfoot on the wing and Thornton at 3C. I think it was Mirtle who said the big reason the Leafs were looking for another centre was because they thought Kerfoot looked better on the wing. But if that doesn't work lots of things can move around. Looking forward to camp.

Here's a line-up combination that's a bit of a change from what we'd maybe expect but would intrigue me:

Kerfoot-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
Vesey-Thornton-Hyman
Robertson-Spezza-Simmonds

L1 has a very smart and quick passer with two of the teams/leagues best goal scorers. Seems like something that could have a lot of success.

L2 was something that I could have sworn played together last season before Mikheyev's injury but it looks like they barely did. Tavares did play with Mikheyev a lot and seemed to have good results.

L3 is where things get a little weird as Hyman very rarely plays out of the top-6. All 3 players are big. Thornton is 6'4", 220 lbs. Hyman 6'1", 210. Vesey is listed at 6'3", 202 lbs but it's also been reported that he's been in the gym a ton during the break. Vesey likes to play in front of the net while Thornton and Hyman do great work cycling and along the boards. Thornton's not going to play the run and gun type game that the Leafs are used to so giving him 2 big wingers like this who can play a more cycling game could be smart. It'll catch teams off guard to have a line like this that could play so differently than the other 3. I think this lines got a lot of potential.

L4 reminds me of that stereotypical video game line: you got a shooter, passer, and a grinder.

Good thing we have Matthews and Tavares in their prime. This is a luxury Sundin never had. The closest those teams ever had to a legit #2 was 1 year of neiuwendyk.

Im excited about this added depth.

Tavares - Matthews - Marner
Thornton - Nylander - Hyman
Should probably practice this config a couple times in the regular season.

I'm guessing by "those teams" you mean the Quinn years because otherwise there are a couple of Sundin/Gilmour years.

Just a quick note that Johnson was talking about yesterday. He said Thornton doesn't play like a regular centreman so you will need very smart players to go with him.  Called him a 160ft player. I think Kerfoot is a very smart guy and could probably adapt. I kind of hope Robertson gets to receive those passes. It's exciting tho, even at 41 because he believes in these guys and thinks they have a chance.
