2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Yeah, that kind of bugs me. I also wish they were able to get a proper name/number on the reversed/yellow side.

So listening to the FAN yesterday they had Damien Cox on (i honesty thought he?d retired) and he mentioned that Dubas has ?built the team in an interesting way in that they have no Stanley cup winners on the team? I guess that was the only way he could find a reason to diss the Giordano trade.

So putting aside the fact that Muzzin has 2 rings, does this really matter? How many previous cup winners did TB have on their team? St Louis? Washington? And I?m genuinely asking because I don?t know and I?m too lazy to look it up.

I know people are always going to take issue with his cap hit and his past couple of playoff performances (which obviously go hand-in-hand and will hopefully be rectified after this years playoff run) but it sure feels like Mitch Marner has actually become underrated in Leafs fans eyes (and just in general). Last night wasn't even his best game but the dude led all Leafs in ice-time with 23:10 and scored a key game tying goal and it feels like nobody even noticed.

That goal by the way was his 27th of the season, which set a new career high with 19 games still remaining on the schedule (again, fairly little attention seemed to have been given to this). And despite missing 9 games to injury he'll likely set a new career high in points this season. He's also outproducing his scoring pace in both the last couple of shortened seasons. All this while also being a top penalty killer on the 5th best PK in the league, and the best PK the Leafs have had in a non-shortened season in 20 years (the 12/13 shortened season due to the lockout somehow operated at a 87.9% PK, best in franchise history).

Furthermore in his last 28 games he has 21 goals, 27 assists, and 48 points for a 1.71 P/GP rate. In that time span he has more goals than anybody but Matthews, and he has the highest point pace in the entire league. Matthews has the 2nd highest and it's just 1.62 P/GP. The highest non-Leaf would be Roman Josi (wow) with 1.54 P/GP. Other notables further down the list since January 15th would be Huberdeau (1.40), MacKinnon (1.36), McDavid (1.33), and Draisaitl (1.17).

It's being overshadowed by Matthews but this is like Hart trophy caliber stuff.

His shooting heater is bananas but I don't think it's entirely too much luck (just a lack of bad luck, if that makes any sense). He's taking the shots his linemates are opening up and generally beating goalies with handling, rather than forcing shots like he did in the last season and early parts of this season. There are maybe 3-ish goals in that span that are from distance that just outright beats a goalie (last night's is a good example) usually off one-timers. There's just a lot of good movement and direction changing and lane crossing with Matthews and Bunting and it makes it very hard for goalies and defenders when the three of them are clicking.

Most importantly, he is having fun. Fun Marner is the best Marner, and that's really good news for the Leafs.

Also too lazy to do real digging, but I looked at the roster. Patrick Maroon has just won with St. Louis right? Maybe the only one?

Yes, jersey is cool, but is this not just a video about a superspreader event

Last night's broadcast was the most vomit-worthy marketing push I have ever seen from a Leafs telecast.  I know it is a business but its a real turn-off for me.

I am not sure if you are getting this in Canada or not but over the last year or so, everywhere in the US there seems to be this huge new push towards online gambling.  I feel like it must be the case that some law was changed to open up online gambling everywhere.

Everything I've seen suggests gambling is terrible for communities.  The opening of a new casino always hurts surrounding communities---it's an economic as well as social loss.  With a billion new casinos online being advertised everywhere, I imagine it is hugely destructive for the US.

The US Supreme Court took down federal anti-gambling laws in 2018 and gave states the option to legalize sports betting at their discretion. This opened the door for online gambling across most of the country.

The amount of gambling commercials on an NHL broadcast also makes my stomach turn. It's like they've completely given up on the idea of these players being role models for kids and they've sold their soul to the online version of Pleasure Paradise from Back to the Future. It really is disturbing.

I was told the Leafs were terrible and would drop to a wild card spot but instead they're in 2nd in the division and Tampa is in the wild card spot.  Is Tampa terrible?  Asking for a friend.

Only the Leafs are terrible.

I think Tampa will be fine and still scary, but they're blipping out a bit here. I think Stamkos scored last night in the loss.

For reference:
Nylander, who is a useless overpaid bum, in his last 10* games is 2-7-9
Tavares, who is washed and done, in his last 10 games is 3-5-8
Both of them only have 1 G and 1 A on the PP.

* this count includes the game against NJD, where he was definitely the problem**
** according to the SportsNet broadcast

Not saying that he can't turn it around on a dime but Vasilevskiy hasn't been his usual dominant self for the past couple months. Since January 1st among the 40 goalies to play in 14 or more games his .911 Sv% ranks 18th, tied with Edmonton's Kaapo Kahkonen. That's after posting a .928 Sv% this season before Jan. 1st.

edit: whoops, I got Minnesota/San Jose's Kahkonen mixed up with Edmonton's Koskinen

Oh my goodness, I wish we had .911 in that stretch.
