2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I thought you were done. I don't understand why you even bother bringing the rest of the board down with you.

Can you imagine joining this team, and it's Tomas Kaberle, Nik Antropov, and Jason Spezza taking care of you off and on the ice?

Last year I was pissed at a lot of things.  Mostly the NHL as a whole. But they are just doing what they think is best to make money. Fine. I may not like it, but we kinda have to accept it.

In other years I've been pissed at the players and management, and maybe I will be again in future years, but not this year.

With no league or team to be mad it, I think I've realized what I've really hated about being a Leaf fan all along. Other fans. Anti-Leafs, other team fans, haters in general. So watch out. I'm out of patience with you sucks and you're going to hear it if I see you bringing garbage in here or anywhere else.

As I've said in a few of the GDTs, life and my advancing years are making it more difficult for me to cope with watching live games at midnight til 3am, especially now I have a 3 year old who likes to wake up at 6am.

So this year I've been watching the odd game live or recording games and watching them the next day while avoiding scores so it's kind of like watching live (it's not the same though, no matter what anyone says!).

All that to say that I feel slightly more divorced and less emotionally invested than in past years where I've watched all 82+ games live. I have a wee bit of a step back and bit more pragmatism.

I did, however, manage to tune in for games 6 and 7 of the playoffs and I really don't think the Leafs overall deserved to lose. Equally I'm not 100% sure they deserved to win either.

So I really don't think there's many changes that need to be made outside of the ones forced by cap and contract constraints. I really don't think the Leafs are much more than a couple of bounces or decent officiating away from a deep run.

I think the third/fourth line make up is one area where TB probably had us in terms of depth and contributions and maybe there's something we can do there.

And I think Tavares to the wing has definitely a strong case to be made. Can Nylander take a centre spot now though or do we need to find a 2nd line centre?

Please follow Carlton's guide to media believability tiers. Carlton, can you link it for me because I'm lazy?

Well from the sounds it that was just him wondering out loud as opposed to saying what he was "hearing" so I'm not even sure it'd apply.

Interesting to hear him say that the Leafs last offer to Campbell was around $2.75mil and that he doesn't expect him back though.

Remember when Sundin was the problem, and the team needed to desperately move on from him to usher in a new (and better) era of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.

Well, yeah.  18 years and counting now...  ::)

There's still a lot of time for that to change. I'm also curious as to when that offer was made. I'm not convinced he'll get significantly better offers on the open market this summer - though, the goalie market could be very interesting, as there are a number of (mostly bad) teams who will probably be looking to add but not a ton of proven starters as UFAs.

They give Campbell a low ball offer but gave Mrazek an extra mil in free agency last year? This is just craziness.

I?m going to wait until the end of the off-season to really care about evaluating all the moves but that Mrazek contract right now is a huge weight on the roster.  If you are offering a million more to a guy who can?t stay healthy I just don?t understand Dubas? mindset.

Im absolutely not tied down to Campbell.  He was good for the team.  He wasn?t the reason we lost this year but he was also mediocre for large chunks too.  That might be injury but that still is a knock against him because he needs to be healthy to produce and he has had more than his share of injuries.  If we can upgrade there I?m fine with it but I really don?t understand the numbers

The team definitely needs another banger for the top 6.  I know they were hoping it would be Ritchie and they failed miserably but they need to find someone and if Tavares moves to the wing I have no idea how you find a Center who fits that role because Kerfoot on the second line as a Center I don?t particularly care for.

I?m thinking we saw the last of Nylander and the team is going to be worse for it.

Yikes. I sure hope not.

I also have my doubts that they would, unless there's a bigger philosophical (management) change too.

But Mrazek lived up to the billing. Hurt and sucked. Terrible signing.

At the end of the day, I don't really care anymore who stays or goes and if the team is better or not on paper. The regular season is fun but ultimately being an excellent regular season team is meaningless if you can't make it out of the first round. They can all go save for Matthews for the right price as far as I'm concerned and if that gets us out of round 1 then so be it.
