speaking of Spezza, why can't we just play him with Matthews or Tavares (pick one) every /other/ shift? (one shift he rests; one he plays; the readjust in the 3rd period).
There is an optimization curve for player deployment (different for every player!) that is dependent on their talent level, physiology, matchups, teammates, etc.; there is also a point of diminishing returns at the upper end of that time curve. This also spans the whole season, so things like playing Matthews and Marner 22+min a night in Oct/Nov might be cool on the statsheet but come April/May they are out of gas and easily beaten by a nobody line of try-hards who still have their legs. A fresh and full-effort plug is going to beat a tired star pretty much every time. I don't have a problem with curtailing Spezza's minutes in the regular season; he's probably the only one who can hit a hatty in 12 min or less.
Babcock had it right when he argued he's trying to help the team win, not individuals win trophies. However, Babcock rigidly held to this belief: this is the roster machine and here are the parts and this is how long they operate for, regardless of the circumstances, unless it's that defensive line of Komarov getting 20+ min to make sure nobody scores.
Keefe is the opposite extreme, 11M kids need their 22+ minutes to juice their numbers, regardless of how ineffective they are playing and how good players like Mikheyev or Engvall or Nylander are doing. The problem is his only method for solving issues is to stack one line to the detriment of the team as a whole. There's no other solution, like flipping forecheck systems or playstyles in-game (does Engvall need to circle back every time, or is it okay for him to lay the puck gently into the corner and then truck over whoever tries to get it?).
Like Carlton said upthread, it'd be really nice if our coach could strike a balance between the two approaches, both in deployment and playstyle. Some meritocracy could go a long way to getting depth players engaged and star players (beyond Nylander) feeling some accountability.
