2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Agreed. No much Hutch in a Leafs' uniform, except as a true emergency backup for a game here or there. No ice time for him, barring some mop up work.

Kallgren should definitely be the first choice for NHL games - older, more experienced, and putting up the better numbers so far.

Obviously, any 3rd string goalie the Leafs would be looking at isn't going to be an exciting addition, but any upgrade of Hutchinson would be welcomed.

Yeah I should add that I think Hutch should be the general backup unless Woll/Kallgren weren't going to start an AHL game anyway.  Don't take game opportunities out of their hands but if we are going to start someone other than Campbell it should be either Woll or Kallgren (with Kallgren being my first go to)

Damn.

Guy had injury concerns before they signed him. Month into the year and has played a whopping 100 minutes slightly ahead of Hutchinson.

I'm not exactly worried since he's obviously just too good of a player for this to continue much longer but it's pretty wild that through 10 games now Matthews has 2 goals and 0 assists at 5-on-5.

He still looks too tight to me...not relaxed and more forcing things...when he's on his game, like much of last season, he's relaxed and looking like he's going to score every time he's got the puck.  Is he getting more back pressure this season maybe?

D'Agostini?  Who?

Tavares plays a pretty bang-y game.  I expect he'll need some games off this year.

He's kinda been an emergency goalie the Leafs/Marlies have used throughout the year. He played for the Marlies during last season when there were a bunch of goalie injuries, and he's basically hanging around the Leafs right now as a practice goalie for when Campbell takes days off.

OK, thanks CTB.  I just updated my MotM spreadsheet and added Alex Bishop since he actually suited up last month.

Nick Ritchie is basically this years Jimmy Vesey, except with a lot more contract security.

That second season of Ritchie's contract feels ripe for a buyout.

He makes 3.3 next season and I haven't given up on him yet. Hoping he can get it going.

Can we send him to the Marlies?  I guess they won't want to do this as it would not help them sign other free agents, but boy is this guy playing like a plug.  I would like to see Steeves up for a game or two.

How much longer can they continue with this Ritchie experiment?  He's worse than Jimmy Vesey was last season, difference being Vesey wasn't making $2.5M

I think it's unfortunate that the way the forward group looks like it's shaking out that Ritchie may just be slightly out of place here. I think if the Leafs had kept McCann somehow then Ritchie would have been a good fit on that sort of third line but as is he doesn't really fit in as a 3rd wheel on a top 6 line or on whatever they're trying to make the 4th line do.

I still have hopes they might figure out how to use him, and that he'll play better, but it is starting to look like he has been awkwardly wedged into a group of forwards without a real defined role.

A buyout would save the Leafs $2.2M on the cap next season, and only add $1.1M for 23/24. If he doesn't start producing soon, he's going to be gone by the summer.

I wonder if he'll find a better fit on a line with Mikheyev ? more speed on a line, might open up a bit more space around the net?

In general I think both the 3rd and 4th line need a speedball injection right into an artery.

Ugh, I really hate buyouts.  I hope he gets something going pretty soon so maybe he's got trade value without retaining too much.

A buyout is obviously the worst case scenario, but, at least, the impact isn't too significant. If Ritchie doesn't find his game and the Leafs can't find a deal that doesn't require taking a bad contract back or retaining more than 20-25% of the cap hit (unless the return is really good), it's probably the better route.
