2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

You know, I was thinking the other day about Kerfoot...the guy scored 50 points last year for $3.5m, and many seemed resigned to the idea that the Leafs are going to trade him for peanuts just to get cap space.

Who do we think is going to replace those 50 points?

He's loved by management, by the coaches but outside of a decent playoff in 2021 and 50 points last year, is he the type of player that TO can progress with? He's a maintenance player, TO can use him to do well during the regular season but really he offers little in the playoffs and not mine nor many's idea of a go to player when that extra gear is necessary. We all expect more from Mitch, Auston, Willie and JT especially when more is needed but I don't think Kerfoot has that extra, like what we saw from Paul of TB during the playoffs. 3.5 mil seems like a bargain for a 50 point player and it is except when that player has little more to offer beyond being in the right place at the right time. This same management and coaches were also very sold on Thornton, spent the better part of his healthy time with the Leafs seeking what he could no longer offer rather than making him earn his role.

TO doesn't need his 50 points but does need players that can and will be productive in the playoffs. Regular season offensive productivity isn't enough anymore for TO.

Just for the record, he's about a ~.4 PPG player in the playoffs, and ~.5 PPG player in the regular season, which equates to 1 point per 10 games played in the playoffs that he's not producing relative to his reg season performance.

Your stated opinion doesn't line up with the actual production.

Not exactly sure what you're saying?

*Manifesting*
  • Sandin bridge deal 2 yrs x 1.8M
  • Evan Rodrigues 2 yrs 2M
  • Alex Kerfoot trade to MIN for Damien Giroux and a conditional 2023 4th rd pick

Is Kerfoot really that low value-wise? He's coming off a 50 point season.

He should be worth more, but that Oliver Bjorkstrand trade did Dubas no favours.

If I'm the Leafs, I'm okay taking a bit of an L in value here to punt that contract slot back a couple of years and free up 3.5M today (after getting Sandin agreed on a number, not opening up more ceiling).

Edit: I also set my expectations low so I can be pleasantly surprised
Edit 2: I mean disappointed less harshly

An interesting statement from someone who recently said that Kadri's great season really wasn't because offensive stats had basically gone up universally across the board.

Kerfoot's game is vanilla, he doesn't win any puck battles, he doesn't appear to even try to win, his only accomplishment last year was getting more icetime with better linemates and essentially bringing them down both offensively and defensively according to fancy stat sites. That's a conclusion they came up with based on some wacked out formula, I essentially came up with my opinion based on what I saw.

I expect Jarnkrok, Kampf and especially Engvall would all be better players offensively while playing with Willie and JT and they could provide more value than Kerfoot beyond the meagre scoring stats he musters. I'm not particularly fond of Jarnkrok and Kampf either but at least TO isn't wasting $3.5 mil on them.

The difference is Kerfoot's numbers weren't that different from what they'd been for the majority of his career. Aside from last year he was at .49 ppg for his career. Last year he was at .62.

By comparison Naz was at .64 ppg for his career before last year where he was at 1.23. For those of you playing at home that makes the difference between Kadri's season and his career roughly 4 and a half times what Kerfoot's gap was.

And for what it's worth...I feel like Kadri's free agent contract kind of supported my position that people wouldn't really see him as a 100 point a year player.

3.5M for Kerfoot's production (nearly no PP time) is actually very good value.

But we can do better with that space if we split it on the right bets.

These boards will start popping soon Herman. Any idea when the Leafs open training camp?

Rookie Tournament in Traverse City starts Sept 15 to Sept 19. Roster will probably be announced some time this afternoon or tomorrow. Pano Fimis (Niagara Ice Dogs) is the only unsigned player that I'm currently aware was invited by the Leafs. Not going to see anyone whose season has already started (NCAA, Liiga, KHL) so no Knies, Niemela, Hirvonen, Ovchinnikov...

Edit: I should've checked Twitter first

Sept 21 is medicals and probably the first press conferences with Dubas/Keefe, and players hit the ice on the 22nd tor Training Camp.

This is probably going to be one of the more interesting training camps I guess.

Who looks better between Samsonov and Murray to start opening night....I figure it's Murray's job to lose the 1A spot but will be interesting either way.

Zach Aston-Reese, Adam Gaudette, Joey Anderson, Kyle Clifford, Wayne Simmonds, David Kampf, Nicholas Aube-Kubel, Calle Jarnkrok, Nick Robertson, Nick Abruzzese, Alexander Kerfoot.  Who of those players takes the bottom 6 + wing spot with Tavares/Nylander.

Does Kerfoot get traded before/during/after camp.  Does Holl get traded before/during/after camp.  Does Sandin get signed.  Does Zach Aston-Reese get a formal contract offer.  Does PK Subban show up on a PTO.  What other veteran players sign PTOs with the Leafs to get the most eyes on their preseason play and maximize their chance at an NHL contract.

Why are we ten days away from training camp with so many rosters still in a huge free agent/RFA/need to be traded mess.  Why does anyone think this is good for the game?

When someone told me last night that the pre-season games were starting this upcoming week I almost didn't believe them. September sure has flown by.
