There's nothing really left, especially at forward, for a team like Carolina to make a big move for. They were the one contender that was going into the deadline with oodles of cap space too (thanks to Pacioretty going on LTIR). JVR maybe? Could also see them being a good fit for Jakub Vrana if it's true that Detroit is looking to move him.

Nothing obvious, but I suspect there's going to be a few guys moving that will catch us off guard, and one is likely land with the Canes.

For instance, I can easily see them picking up someone like Granlund from the Preds now that Nashville seems to have thrown in the towel.

Think they can fit JT Miller in?

They have the cap space with all the money they have on LTIR, but, do they have the desire? I'm not so sure. That's a big commitment.

And Miller is out, week to week,.

Obviously things can still change this week but here's a short run down of the arms race in the East

Boston: + Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway | - Craig Smith
Toronto: + Ryan O'Reilly, Noel Acciari, Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty | - Adam Gaudette, Mikhail Abramov, Pavel Gogolev, Joey Anderson
Tampa Bay: + Tanner Jeannot | - Cal Foote

Carolina Hurricanes:
New Jersey Devils: + Timio Meier, Scott Harrington | - Andreas Johnsson, Fabian Zetterlund, Shakir Mukhamadullin
New York Rangers: + Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane (Friday probably) | - Sammy Blais

Kyle didn't leak anything this time!

Let me say I don?t want to get rid of Murray, but what about the possibility of putting him on waivers? If he clears the Leafs could save $1.075m of Murray?s cap hit and he could stay fresh in the AHL until he?s called back up.

If he?s claimed the Leafs shed his entire cap hit and open up some money for a Samsonov RFA-extension next season.

Obviously I?d want to have 2 NHL tested goalies going into the playoffs, but?

That's actually a really good idea, unless I'm missing something. If he's picked up as a claim its a win, and they can get another backup before the deadline, and if he clears, it's a win to get some room and get him up to speed with multiple starts.

It's 1,125,000 if he clears. Let's say he doesn't. Leafs are now in scramble mode trying to find a 1B. I think Sammy's been good but there's nothing telling me he's going to run the table in the playoffs. This isn't like Potvin taking over for Fuhr.

As for next year. Leafs with McMann, Robertson and Knies(900K) on the roster have 12.6M in space with a 18 man roster. 7D, 9F, Murray and Woll. They could sign ROR and Bunting for 4M each, Acciari for 1.5 and still have around 3.1M to sign whoever. I think Woll backs up next season whoever the 1A is.

Given his good run down there with the Marlies, maybe we say Vaya Con Dios to the Giraffe and end up with the a 4th line of Knies/Lafferty/McMann as a smashup line sometime?

I didn't like how TO played after the 1st period against Seattle, it was pathetic. The idea of having Matthews and JT was TO having 2 #1 lines and therefore very difficult to defend against, Boston is very difficult to defend against and they have their top 3 forwards on one line, most of the time. Maybe it's time TO tries this, TO has the forward depth to assemble a credible 2nd line with the addition of O'Rielly.

Nylander/Matthews/Marner

JT/O'Rielly/Bunting

Eng/Accairi/Jarnkrok

Kampf/Lafferty/Kerfoot

I was surprised to see Keefe insert O'Rielly with JT and Mitch at center, initial results were good so we'll see.

Murray is a proven stanley cup goalie, you just don't throw Woll into the fire like that. If ANYTHING happens to Samsonov and they traded away/let Murray walk, Leafs season is over.

IF Murray can go back to that November/December form Leafs will be fine in the playoffs.

First practice with the new guys. Line are about what I expected. At least in terms of who's in and who's out.

I feel like Rielly and Holl have never really jived that well together, but obviously a decent amount of time left to figure out what works best.

FWIW, K?llgren was the back up goalie last year in the playoffs.

Wait, wait, wait....are we seriously not including the smash hit "Secret Garden" in the Springsteen Leaf list? Murray DEFINITELY has a garden of some unknown substance hidden somewhere in Toronto...

Something I learned while writing that is that Bruce Springsteen has recorded a lot of songs over the last 50 years.

Harrington was picked up on waivers by Anaheim.
