2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

and Carolina just picked up Gostisbehere, whose name I spelled correctly in one try from memory, for very cheap.

I've always been a fan of Mr. GhostBear but I mean the defincienies in his game are pretty undeniable at this point. Good offensively, not so much defensively. Carolina not getting any of his $4.5mil AAV retained is also pretty noteworthy, especially since Arizona is already retaining on 2 deals and might want to retain on a 3rd before Friday. I doubt any other playoff bound team would have taken him at his full cap hit so the Coyotes getting a 3rd is actually pretty good business for them. Reminder too that they got him for free along with a 2nd and 7th rounder a couple of years ago. Turned out to be a solid investment.

Updating this guy because every time I do, something happens:

Boston: + Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway, Tyler Bertuzzi | - Craig Smith
Toronto: + Ryan O'Reilly, Noel Acciari, Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty, Luke Schenn | - Rasmus Sandin, Pierre Engvall, Adam Gaudette, Mikhail Abramov, Pavel Gogolev, Joey Anderson
Tampa Bay: + Tanner Jeannot | - Cal Foote, Vlad Namestnikov

Carolina Hurricanes: + Jesse Puljujarvi, Gostisbehere
New Jersey Devils: + Timio Meier, Scott Harrington | - Andreas Johnsson, Fabian Zetterlund, Shakir Mukhamadullin
New York Rangers: + Vladimir Tarasenko, Patrick Kane, Tyler Motte | - Sammy Blais

Glad we didn't get Bertuzzi.

Any particular reason?
I'm on the fence about him. I think he's kinda overrated. He gets 3 mins of PP time per game, has 4 goals and 19pts, doesn't hit much, doesn't kill penalties so he's like Bunting,(pest) but doesn't score?

Let's see how you feel when we get Domi.

I liked Bertuzzi, but didn't think he'd get a 1st rounder. Tough to not get him, even tougher that he went to Boston of all teams. Looking like slim pickings for forwards on the trade market now.

Slightly increases the odds of Knies playing games in the playoffs, assuming he signs and doesn't look out of place in his short late season audition.

I would be interested in taking a run at Buchnevich and running a St Louis transplant line for funsies.

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Marner
Buchnevich-O?Reilly-Acciari
Aston-Reese-Kampf-Lafferty

Kerfoot would have to go the other way or be shed in a separate transaction. Probably too expensive to get the cap retention required for so many seasons left.

Word is Domi for a 2nd down the road. Do you do it for our 3C and leave ROR where he is or you could even switch them if need be.

Like many, I don't think they're done.

A lot of the 2023 'obvious' left winger candidates for trade are gone.

To 'find' a left winger, my guess is that Dubas would try to land a left winger with a couple of contract years - like the McCabe deal and probably with retention involved to get the higher talent level and fit the cap. And that Dubas might be willing to part with a prospect or Boston's first to do it. One of the D and/or Kerfoot could be traded to make cap room. If it is Holl, he would have some trade value so that Dubas would not have to give up as much young talent overall.

I can't see them standing pat with 9 NHL D plus Benn and a talent hole on left wing.

Anyone think Woll is backup next year? He doesn't have a huge resume but 7 total NHL games now and he's 5-2 with a .922%  Certainly looks more promising than Sparks early returns. It's a long way off but we may have finally developed a goalie for ourselves

Would be a massive boost for the Leafs cap space if he was able to grab onto that spot next season. Just have to make sure the Leafs have a very competent 3rd goalie who can also somehow get through waivers.

I kind of think I?m ok with Domi if he comes along.

Also McCabe and Domi on a Leafs playoff roster sounds? retro.

Domi just got moved to Dallas (and has bounced around and off every team he's ever been on, so...).

I see the value in the player type though: play driving transition winger that's a rush threat. Someone like a lefthanded Nylander would do nicely.

I have a feeling that last night was Woll's biggest game of his career.

I think Dubas showcased him, and he's gone for an experienced backup today.

Dubas won't survive if goaltending is what downs the Leafs these playoffs.

Yeah just came in to delete my last post :D

And yes, it was the style of play I'm not sure we quite have in a very well rounded bunch of forwards so if there's similar out ther...

What "experienced backup" is going to help this team? If both Samsonov and Murray are cooked the Leafs are screwed anyway so why not hope for some rookie luck in net? There's no goalie available that will make a difference. Habs got rookie run with Roy, Canes with Cam Ward, Blues with Binnington, it can happen from time to time

Adam Henrique is probably the best player to fit this mold, at least of the names that are reportedly available. Has 1 year left on his deal with a $5.85mil AAV, so 50% retention will be required to make him make cap space for the team.

He's a bit of a rich man's Kerfoot. Versatile, speedy, can play W or C, kills penalties. And I think he should be able to bring more to the table offensively than Kerfoot does. Bonus points for being a GTA guy.

Downsides are that he's a bit on the older side (33 years old) and he's currently out week to week with an injury so it's a bit unknown when he'll be healthy enough to suit up.

Maybe the injury allows us to get him "cheap"?
