I think Tkachuk's reaction was a bit of the top but it does bring into question what exactly players are allowed to do in those situations. Kochetkov went for a poke check, which is of course entirely fair game. But he missed the puck entirely, during regular play would that not be a tripping penalty on him? And if so, do tripping penalties or penalties of any kind just not exist in penalty shot/shootout situations?

Tkachuk got a misconduct for his actions after the penalty shot play... Kochetkov's trip probably should've been called.

Is there an established penalty for that? I can't imagine it's 2-minutes because what if it happens in the shootout. I guess Tkachuk would just get another attempt, although I could see the argument for just allowing a goal as well.

What the hell is going on with the NHL schedule?  Ottawa has only played 23 games, some teams have played 30.  I don't ever recall a team having 7 games in hand before.  Did they just forget the Sens were a team and not schedule any games for them?

In PS situations (and EN attempts), I think they just award the goal.

Violations During the Penalty Shot
There are certain instances where the officials may require the penalty shot to be re-taken. Typically, this is when the goaltender runs afoul of the rules.

The goalkeeper may attempt to stop the shot in any manner except by throwing his stick or any object, or by deliberately dislodging the goal, in which case a goal shall be awarded.

So what is it that would get a goalie in trouble?

[*]Leaving the crease before the player touches the puck
[*]Committing an infraction worthy of a minor penalty
[*]Dislodging the net unintentionally

From what I'm gathering in a cursory online look, in junior leagues, a follow-up attempt is allowed if there is interference from the goalie or defending team, and a misconduct is assessed to the player/coach in violation.

Lol the Oilers had the lead

They had won 8 in a row, you expect a crap game after such a hot streak.

Yeah, I mean the Oilers are 2 points out of a playoff spot and have 2 games in hand on St. Louis.  As much as they had a bad game, they are back and should easily make the playoffs.  They are a considerably better team than Arizona/St. Louis.

They got within one with the goalie pulled and then TB ended up scoring two empty net goals. They didn't have Austin Matthews to get two with the goalie pulled.

McDavid will drag them into the playoffs kicking and screaming if he has to. Beyond that though is a different question.

Objectively hilarious, but also scary because those skates are in McCleod?s face

Brown has just 1 point, an assist, in 14 games since returning from his injury. 1 point in 23 games on the season. Still kind of amazed that Edmonton went ahead with his 10th game that triggered a $3.225mil cap hit for next season.

I'd think another Connor might have insisted.

This is fun (for me). Brannstrom was a popular draft target for the Leafs in 2017 but he got scooped up a couple picks earlier while Liljegren continued to fall. He?s a smaller, puck moving defenseman. Getting pushed to LW to trial because he is behind Chabot/Chychrun/Sanderson on the LD depth chart, and ideally teams are looking for bruisers and crease clearers on the bottom pair.

I don't see why teams don't try this more often.  I know it's two different positions, and thus mindsets.  But an offensively inclined d-man who may jump into the play often would enjoy the extra offensive freedom.  He's lower on their depth chart on the back end, so worth the trial on the wing.  He may not be worse than a few guys occupying the position right now.

Move Kaberle to the wing.
