Even if they ran a "grid" of kevlar reinforcement (every 2-3 inches or something) weaved through the sock, that would probably work to reduce cuts, keep the weight of the socks down and remain breathable.

I think our misremembering comes from the expected syllable count relationship to the rhythm and meter for the stanza. She elides "Can-I" and "make-it" into single notes each, which makes it clunky looking in text.
