2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Why do the Leafs play at 6 on Tuesday?  Is Arn making the schedule now?

All 32 teams are playing on Tuesday, so they're trying to make it with alternating starts.  So the Leafs game starts at 6, the next game starts at 6:15, the game after at 6:30, etc etc.

It's an interesting concept, and I'm curious to see how it goes.

I like how the NHL is trying to sell "don't start every single game at the same time" as some sort of revolutionary idea/event.

It's even better that they immediately ditch the idea for the rest of the season.

I would have significantly more 3pm ET Leafs face offs on Saturdays and Sundays 🤣

(Currently watching Detroit v Calgary for exactly this reason)

That's one of the interesting things with soccer, the pretty much guaranteed game time.  The Tottenham game starting at 8 PM your time today will be done at 10:00 pretty much.  Sure there is injury time but soccer games rarely go past the two hour mark.

I really like this lineup. Let?s hope Bert can find some chemistry with Tavares and the 3rd line can start to chip in on a regular business too.

I think we'll see a lot of LW shuffling this season. The C-RW combos seem to be good fits (or, in the case of Reaves, the least awful fit), for the most part, while the LWs can generally move up and down the lineup pretty well.

I like it too. I only ask that Keefe rolls the top three lines. Something like
19 mins - 17 mins - 16 min for the top three lines.

Things could still completely fall off the rails for Woll, but having him at 766K for this year and next seems like it could be highway robbery.

Many NHL teams run fantasy football leagues throughout the early season. The man acting as commissioner of the Leafs? league is someone many Leafs had not met personally when the draft went down on Sept. 5, two weeks before training camp opened.

?I just came in (in the summer) and I asked, ?Who runs fantasy football? Do you have a league? I want in.? And nobody was really jumping on that,? Reaves said. ?So I was like, ?If nobody wants it, I?m happy to do it.??

[...]

?I always say, I don?t play the big minutes. I don?t score 100 points. So everything off the ice, I like to take care of. I really do. I like planning the parties, I like getting the boys together, planning dinners, do the football, whatever it is off the ice. I love doing that kind of stuff,? Reaves said.

This is a good article because it is mostly just Minten quotes. The kid has a great perspective and approach that will serve him well.

It's early, but I can start to appreciate some of the things that Klingberg brings. He seems really good at keeping the puck in at the line when there's a tough pass back to him or the defender is trying to clear. A number of times I've noticed him keeping plays alive in the ozone when I thought the puck would be cleared.

He is also very good at making difficult outlet passes.

He is sometimes bad at making simple recovery plays. Like skating it into the crowd of forecheckers instead of just flipping it out when he had a chance.

But by and large, he has improved as he plays and all the good stuff mentioned above is valuable. Great OZ passer. Sometimes bad shot selection (left shin pad or right shin pad?)

Klingberg's been about as expected I think. The fact that he probably shouldn't be exposed to 2nd pair minutes though is exactly why I thought the team overpaid a bit for him. But nothing we can do about that now.

Minten was a cool story, but it did not take very long at all to discover that he isn't NHL ready (which shouldn't be seen as a negative at this point in his career). It's too bad he wasn't able to collect his first goal or assist at some point while he was playing.

If they really wanted to stretch it out, they could've loaned Holmberg down and played Minten on L4, but that would've been distinctly unmerited.

Lagesson is absolutely the correct LD to bring up instead of the previous Simon Benoit.

I assume they intended to send him back at the end of this road trip anyway.
