2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

NHL Rumours Trade Idea
Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic: Looking at a hypothetical three-team trade involving the Arizona Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames.

Coyotes receive the Toronto Maple Leafs 2024 first-round pick.
Maple Leafs receive defenseman Matt Dumba and a 2024 second-round pick.

Maple Leafs receive defenseman Chris Tanev.
Flames receive a 2024 second-round pick (via the Coyotes)

I'm reluctant to trade a first but the above and the guy who proposed it (Eric Duhatschek) caught my eye.
I'm not sure it is realistic but the concept is not completely nuts.
I had been thinking if they had to trade a first, I'd like a 2nd back to lessen the pain and voila ...

It got me thinking when I was looking at the Coyotes Cap Friendly numbers
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/coyotes
Weber, Shea RD Injured 3yrs @ $7,857,143 on LTIR
Costing a team in a building with 4,600 capacity

I thought of the Marleau deal where the Leafs traded a 1st to get the Hurricanes to take the last year of his $6.x Mil deal off the Leafs hands.

Arizona has a boat load of 2nd round picks. Leafs have none.
If Az get any more draft picks, they'll run into Chicago's problem of signing them all. (They could roll them over ..)

So I wondered, for example - a sketch of an idea: Leafs trade Lagesson (to give Az a dman) for Dumba & Weber plus 2? second round picks - one for each $7 mil season and some consideration towards getting Dumba and they retain 50% of what remains of Dumba's deal (which will be offset by taking Weber's salary off them this season). Something like that ...

It would be a sweet deal for the Leafs - they get a RH dman and 2 picks for $ and Lagesson. AZ saves a bundle of dough to help their bottom line while still being well north of the cap minimum with a bunch of RFAs to sign.

Play around with the numbers or picks - the concept is something where the Leafs could use their money to get a RH Dman, picks to help the prospect pipeline or maybe turn around and get Tanev.

I figured Arizona must be hurting with only 4,600 tickets/game. I've seen mixed reviews of their profitability.

Another one: maybe the Caps would send a prospect and pick for the last year and a bit of Backstrom's $9.x deal ...

Am I crazy?

Weber's real money salary is only $1 million a year.

They could eat Voracek, Little & Boyd LTIR and save them $3.5 mil
That would be offset by 50% retention of Dumba so net $1.55M savings
Maybe pick up a couple of AHL or NHL slugs contracts
My hope would be that something like that would drop the draft pick price down.
Or you get some picks back from a higher pick like Duhatschek suggested

Weber isn't on LTIR. He's on IR and the Yotes use contracts like his to get to the cap floor. As for the building...they could care less right now. They get money from the NHL...the Leafs and other profitable teams.
Also Arizona got a 5th and Weber for an unknown player. You're not getting anything close to a 2nd rounder for an potential LTIR guy.

Maybe lol...no you're not but I don't see Wash giving up anything to dump a guy that can go on LTIR. They may want to dump Wilson though. His new contract 6.5M x7 kicks in next year. That's a terrible deal for a 30 year old.

Missed that on Weber's deal.
Voracek & Little are done. They could be put on LTIR.
Boyd is also done but just for the year. He too could be put on LTIR
They're at $80M in cap. Floor is $61.x so they have coverage there.
Those guys contracts are over for next year.

They're already getting the NHL max for revenue sharing.
They're $8 mil behind Ottawa so something like this deal doesn't seem to hurt them.
And could help their bottom line.

This is the kind of out of the box thinking that the Leafs did in the past.

Was that 100% Dubas ? I don't know.
Brad Treiving is yet to prove himself as a (decent) Leaf GM.

If it involved cap shenanigans, it was almost certainly driven by Pridham.

Interesting that the Leafs have only 2 defensemen signed into next season...Rielly and McCabe @ $2m for the last year of his deal.

Benoit and Liljegren are RFA...arb rights, but still RFA.  Lagesson, Gio, and Brodie are UFA.

McMann is a UFA at the end of this season!

Timmins is signed for next year. They also have some Marlies D signed too.

Fair enough on Timmins...I was just looking at current roster guys.

I don't know about y'all, but he doesn't figure into anything meaningful moving forward unless he takes a leap forward.

This snuck up on me, I just assumed he'd be eligible for waivers starting next season only. I'm not exactly the worlds biggest fan of Holmberg  but can acknowledge he's playing well enough to be in the line-up right now. But with trade deadline day only 5 games away now it might be smart to do a bit of asset management here and keep him from that 70th game until the team knows for sure how much cap space it's going to be working with post-deadline. I don't get the sense the Leafs feel the same way though.

Totally agree here, I like Pontus game, but we are talking about 8 days to the deadline, I still think that the Leafs will stand pat, but you can be extra safe and keep him away from this 70th game, even if you need to demote him and call some one from the Marlies.

I don't think the Leafs will be thinking that way either. You play your best lineup every night. I don't think it's a coincidence that the 4th line looks good without Gregor. I'm waiving him if they need a roster spot.

Lyubushkin $687.5K cap hit

Eat $687.5K gets a team a 6th
Eat $1.125M gets a team a 4th (Devils Tanev)

Looks like Jarnkrok is back....a move is coming because Gio to LTIR isn't enough. They need to drop 1 off the roster besides him.

If Liljegren can't play tomorrow then he could get placed on IR retroactive to his last game and still be able to get activated before the game on Monday if he's good to go then. If Lily doesn't on the IR, or once he gets taken off, Robertson probably gets temporarily sent to the Marlies until after the trade deadline when rosters expand.

Potential trade(s) could obviously change all that but that's likely the plan at this point.

Don't like seeing Robertson recent momentum squashed but asset management says he's probably got to go down for now. Nice to be healthy up front though.

Nothing wrong with having depth and being able to have Robertson with the Marlies for a week if needed.

Several Leafs comment on Lyubushkin
So does Keefe & Treliving

Treliving & Keefe also provide update on Giordano

Treliving still looking at ways to improve the team
Defense, forwards, "we have 3 goaltenders today, we'll see what tomorrow brings"

Is that goalie quote really from Treliving? I doubt any team looking for a goalie has a today Dman available.
