2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Sounds like Nylander's negotiations aren't going well. Ship his as* to Arizona and scoop Keller who wants out and you have some extra cash to spend. Change the complexion of this team it's definitely needed.

I do not understand why they would keep Murray with Woll no longer waiver exempt unless he's going to reside on Robidas Island.

My guess is they're going to see what happens during the first wave of free agent signings to see if they can get any of the bigger names on reasonable deals. If they do, they buyout Murray during the 2nd buyout window (activated by filing an arbitration claim with Samsonov).

If they don't sign a player like ROR or Duchene or Bertuzzi or Graves then they might not even need $12mil in cap space this offseason so he could be kept as insurance for Woll either in terms of struggling as a rookie or for his still possible bone-itis issues.

Yea, that should change that darn complex issue of Nylander scoring big goals and producing in the playoffs..(FTR Keller would be great, but he isn't any bigger than Nylander and doesn't hit either).

On a related note, I keep hearing about the need to trade Nylander before his NTC kicks in and limits potential landing spots: wouldn't trading him now to a non-preferred destination only result in him not signing an extension and thus drastically affecting his trade value? It seems to me they can wait for a bit, regardless of his NTC, because if he isn't re-signing here at least he can go somewhere he wants to go, sign an extension and still recoup a significant amount in return, no?

I agree about changing the complexion of this team.

If we?re running back most of the same players, minus key players like O?Reilly and Bunting, we?re likely regressing.

Are we all happy with the mindset? if you make it to the playoffs anything can happen? Because this team (at best) looks to repeat last years regular and post season performances as it currently sits.

There is virtually no way the team will stay as it currently sits.

Seriously. The offseason has really barely just started. Free agency hasn't even opened yet. Lots can - and will - still happen.

They aren't going into the season with over 10M in cap room, with Muzzin on LTIR.

I completely understand there are still gonna be changes here. My concern is based more on the approach. Are we going to shake up the core a little and try to evenly dispense the cap room between the forward group and the defence, or are we just happy to plug and play with some of the slots still available?

Management in my opinion and from what we are reading seem bent on running the same  core and it will be the same plug and play to fill out the roster which in my opinion is a mistake. If some of the numbers being bantered around are true we are just rinsing and repeat what has plagued us the last couple years. Our D needs improving and a more balanced team in my opinion. If these guys aren't willing to take a bit less then make some changes. Seeing what others are signing for it seems like we always overpay. That needs to end. If these guys could figure out what it takes to win in the playoffs and show up and produce then fine but that hasn't been the case so why do we need to give them significant bumps in salary?

I don?t disagree. Let?s see what Treliving does in the next little while here. I?m hoping for some new players that provide a little different approach to team play. I?m just not counting on it.

I'm not either. I think Shanahan needs to go as I think he calls the shots. Treliving is just a puppet in my opinion. Why he is still employed after the yearly failures in the playoffs is mind boggling. Should have been a complete overhaul with management.

Weren't the Leafs winning with Knies in the lineup. As soon as he was mugged the thing collapsed.  He was a difference maker and will only become a force of nature in the very near future. I would actually like him to play on Matthews wing.  Please bring in Reeves for some power punching.

With Ryan Reaves turning down Minnesota, all eyes are on Toronto. They are believed to be ready to pitch Bertuzzi (a very hot commodity) and at least one defenceman, although all of this will take some gymnastics. Auston Matthews won?t be signed by July 1, but every expectation is he will by the start of the season. The number is going to look big when it?s signed, but will shrink as the cap grows. William Nylander won?t be done Saturday either, but everyone is trying to remain calm and not overreact.

I don't know how I feel about all this. If we can get Bertuzzi do we think it'll be at a more reasonable for services rendered cap hit?

O?Reilly and Schenn will be hitting the UFA market
How much does Schenn want? Seems crazy to let him walk go. I guess we?ll eventually see how much he gets paid this year. He absolutely shocked me in the playoffs with defensive play not just physical play. I suppose he just might not want to play in Toronto.

He?s supposedly looking for around $2mx3
