All aboard the band wagon... were playoff bound.

This is from daysofyorr blog (yes it is anti-anything-not-Bruins) but has an
interesting chart on giveaways with the top 4 being Leafs in the playoffs.

A stat like that indicates that the problem is in the system of play, not the players themselves.

There are a lot of lea fans who are pissed at Dion and he took a beating in almost every form of media since the game ended. But here is an interesting write up about breaking down a scapegoat. Very interesting reading and might just temper the feelings of some fans who feel he isn't performing well.

http://theleafsnation.com/2013/5/9/breaking-down-a-scapegoat

That outlines a lot of what I've slowly come to realize about Phaneuf over the last year or two.  I used to be on his case a lot, but then I stopped looking only at him and started looking at the job he's been given on this team.  Then I started asking myself what I'd really expect to change if someone else were given that same job - because someone has to do it.

That doesn't completely give him a pass - he makes mistakes, for sure, and last night's game was absolutely one of them.  But I don't think getting rid of him solves the problem, either.

Oh i'm not giving him a full pardon, not in the least but i think that leaf fans expectations of him are wrong based on the stats shown in that writeup. He plays against the best in the league shift in and shift out, is near the top tier for shooting % in the league among dmen etc. People harp on his turnovers a lot and to a point rightfully so but when you play against the best every night how can you NOT expect to make mistakes... it is the elite players from the other teams you are seeing. Either Dion has to be the reincarnation of Bobby Orr or Elite players are you know... pretty damn good at stealing the puck and scoring with it.

Dion has to be taken with a grain of salt not a block is my whole point i guess.

Who else are we going to put in his place that won't want more money and we don't have to give up a huge chunk of our future for? Not many names come to mind off the top of my head.

I don't like everyone dumping all over Dion, sure he was at fault, but so were Reimer and O'Byrne on the winning goal.  Phaneuf isn't a true #1 D-man even though he's forced into the role on this team.  It's the same situation with Bozak, he's not a #1 center, yet he's playing the role for lack of someone else that takes the reigns.

Dion's minutes and salary are too high for what he is. He plays far better when his minutes are limited in a game to 25 or less.

but there you go ...that last line undermines the comparison to bozak ...bozak isn't paid like a number 1 center.  Dion is paid like a #1 D ...so if he's not ...i think it's fair to call him on it ...

another omen.... lets hope your right. By all my reading today it seems the Bruins have our respect. I know they gained mine this year.

My heart says yes, but three games in a row over the beast of the east, I doubt it. It would be nice to see a game seven though.

Should the Leafs finish the unlikely task of taking this series who would you like the Leafs like to face between the Caps and Rags.  A Rags team with stellar goaltending and a team more similar to the Bruins style or a more offensive geared Cap team.  Part of me wants to say Caps because I think we may be able to get into the head of a younger goaltender and a weaker defense.  Although the Rags would allow us to keep marching along playing the same type of team although to a lesser extent without the need to really make any adjustments.  I go with the Caps.

Strangely, I haven't had the desire to post much over the last few weeks and especially during these playoffs. I'm not really sure why that is... Internet version of holding my breath? Either way, I'm thrilled we're giving Boston a run. Many encouraging signs going forward plus valuable experience gained.

I hear ya, I stand up for every game and don't take my eyes off the screen so the GDT's I am unable to visit with any regularity during the game.  I have just got to say that the Leafs have made me so proud.  If we manage to get by the Bruins, I really could see them going all the way as I can't think of a team that scares me any more than the Bruins did going into this series.  I mean the Leafs have done this with no meaningful tradeline acquisitions like so many of the other so called contenders have.  The Bruins pick up a Jagr and Redden for their run to add to an already fantastic team.  The Leafs should make some noise next season, great to be a Leaf fan right now.

Wow!! Its quiet on these boards, must be the tension. I think today and Monday will be a wild ride. I think I will need to sit in my chair and strap in nice and tight. :o

I'll take either. If a miracle happens and the Leafs pull this off, either the Caps or Rangers will prove to be a less difficult foe than the Bruins. (If the Bruins beat the Leafs, I think the B's will go to the Cup final. The Pens' goaltending is too mediocre; hell, Pens will be lucky to get to the Conf. final at this rate.)

But if I had my druthers? Give me the Rangers. Pucks go in off of someone's ass, a tip deflection, or old-time crashing the net. That's how you solve King Henry.

The only way you solve Ovechkin is a Darcy Tucker submarine to the knees.

Well here we are, game seven and playing like champs. I do think we can win this, but our boys need to be solid for the whole 60 mins. To beat Boston three in a row, and the last one at home will be insane. The wagon is all fired up, and win or lose, we have been treated to the max by a team that is only going to get better and better.
