Burke Fired

Yeah McCowan saying the asking price is Kadri + Gardiner for Luongo.  Time will tell if this is true or he's full of it.

I don't think we need time to tell anything. When it comes to the Leafs, more often than not, McCowan has been full of it. I put absolutely zero stock in what he says.
I get the whole Mccown-hockey thing but don't underestimate the fact that the guy is VERY plugged in. He doesn't go around parading his scoops but I don't think he would have said that if he didn't have it on very good authority.

Yep.  Just tune him out when he starts talking Maple Leafs.

Who? McCowen or madferret?  ;)

Bozak and Kadri would be A LOT to part with for Luongo and his anchor of a contract. Kadri and Gardiner would get Nonis fired next and make the Leafs the joke of the league, if they're not already after today's impromptu announcement.

A plug and a guy who can't crack one of the worst rosters in the league is not a lot to give up for a top 10 goalie with lots of game left in his tank.

Oh boy. Here we go.... Too cold for you under the bridge? ;)

Bridge?

He's really not as plugged in as he wants people to believe he is. In fact, I can't think of a single time when he's clearly been right about something like this regarding the Leafs.

So are you saying you think he made it up?

I think, at the very least, that his use of the word "fact" in this case bears scrutiny.

I think he's passing on rumours from other people who are also not as connected as they want people to believe, and possibly embellishing or putting his own spin on it. I'm willing to believe he heard it from someone, but I don't for a second believe it was from someone who actually knows anything.

I wonder why there were only the Rogers and LeafsTV logos on the backdrop during the press conference. Surely Rogers and Bell can afford a new one, they've had since June to print a new one up.

I know this is off the real topic but I wondered it myself. I even flipped to TSN to see if they had imposed a logo over the Rogers....

As far as the firing goes - I've decided that very recent events caused
this otherwise why did it take from August until January to decide this
"new direction" - keeping in mind the replacement (Nonis) was already standing there. So in my opinion it's Luongo and we've going to overpay for a goalie that has 10 years left on a contract. Gillis is popping champagne corks while awaiting Nonis's phone call.

Well, he did precede what he said by saying "I know it as fact." He's not a dumb guy, and he wouldn't just throw something out there with the hope of getting a scoop. Chances are, what Mccown said is absolutely true.

McCowan and other sports radio talk show guys throw around phrases like "It's a fact" and "I know for sure" so often that they have no meaning. He's not trying to get a scoop, but he is really just running his mouth - something he is exceptionally good at.

Think of it this way. For McCown to know what was said "as a fact" he'd have to have not one but two accounts of what was said privately to Brian Burke. How likely does that strike anyone?

He has done this and been wrong a million times before. He just shrugs it off and keeps going. It doesn't bother him when he's wrong one bit so him worrying about it being true is not happening.

I think he puts less effort into hockey knowledge than he does into any other sport he talks about.  You can tell any time someone asks him about a team other than the Leafs - it's that whole 'name 5 players' joke.. he can't.  He can barely name 5 Maple Leafs.

A few examples?

I don't think this precludes him from getting information on matters of this nature.

Mccown's show is must-listen radio right now. He's going HARD after Anselmi. He's attacking the move and asking all the tough questions. Anselmi comes across as a corporate shill trying to dance around everything. It's evident from this interview Burke was fired not so much as a hockey decision but because the new owners didn't like Burke the person.

McCown has had Brian Burke over for lunch. You read twitter accounts from reporters.

Are you really saying that you know more about what might have happened with Burke than McCown would?

Bob Mccown just reiterated what he said earlier: (paraphrasing)

"I am 100% sure the Canucks asked for Kadri and Gardiner in exchange for Roberto Luongo. Even a senior executive said to Burke 'you have to get Luongo to make the playoffs and if you won't make the playoffs you'll be gone.' Brian said 'I won't do it because I think it's the wrong thing to do for this team.'"
