@SkinnyPPPhish: "A trade will happen before a coaching change b/c blah blah blah."
The Leafs have had 67% roster turnover since Carlyles first game in TOR. Only 10 of 30 players still with the team.

Ok so we should expect a trade then. Got it.

apologies if this has been posted already...i thought it was an interesting read from the Tampa blogger...

I really do want to apologize for posting last week thinking the Leafs could get 100 points and the possible outcome for Carlyle if that were to happen.  Based on the past two games there is no hope in hell the Leafs will get 100 points so maybe wishful thinking on my part when I originally posted (but in fairness I didn't expect two embarrassing blowouts).

The problem with the team is either Carlyle's system is way too complicated for the players to understand or the players are not willing to play under this system.  Or Carlyle's system is really good, but the players assembled are not suitable for this system.  So before any changes are made, the management team should analyze what Carlyle's system is all about.  They need to determine if the system is the problem or the players, then take things from there, so I hope there will be no knee-jerk moves and make the wrong moves because proper analysis was not done.

Unfortunate coincidence for Carlyle that the players on his last 2 teams can't understand his system.

And the players that leave his system have a tendency to do pretty well in other systems.

According to the blog post linked in caveman's post above, Carlyle's system involves ensuring that his team spends as much time in the defensive zone as possible without the puck.

Both Anaheim and Toronto dropped to 30th in the league for FF% under his tenures.

Leafs let in a soft goal to go 2-3 down after (somehow) fighting back twice despite playing horrifically.

Camera cuts to Carlyle stood like this

I wonder if he's just all out of ideas now too. I don't understand this team anymore either.

For those hoping for Mike Babcock to be the Leafs' coach:

The coach of the Detroit Red Wings has good reason for his upbeat mood.

Soon, he will be the NHL?s highest-paid coach. And he will continue to earn that pay behind the Wings? bench.
Expect a new contract between the Wings and Babcock to be announced sooner rather than later.

According to multiple NHL sources familiar with the negotiations, the announcement could be imminent, perhaps even a holiday gift for the man who?s guided Canada to the last two Olympic gold medals.

Hopefully he's just on a short extension so he can still come over when Stamkos signs here.

Our lineup of Thornton, Stamkos, Tavares, Kadri up the middle is going to be awesome.

this is the pitts if true, hopefully only two years and then he can come over.  If you watched last nights game his team was never out of position, always ready to pounce and counterattack.

Babcock pretty strongly saying that these reports are not true:

Babcock calls reports of imminent deal fantasy.

Craig Custance @CraigCustance  ?  14 minutes ago
More Babcock: "As far as negotiation between Mike Babcock & Ken Holland, there is none. Ok? There is none... There's nothing more to tell."

Craig Custance @CraigCustance  ?  13 minutes ago
Asked Babcock if a deal during the season was a possibility: "I don't think so."

But I even asked Mirtle if Duff was a reliable source.  It's like these guys will retweet anything!

The timing of this whole thing is curious to me.  Right when Babcock's team is playing a home-and-home with the team that Babcock is rumoured or imagined to be interested in coaching, this story/rumour comes out.  Babcock shoots it down hard, saying that not only are there no contract negotiations going on, but also that there aren't any expectations of negotiations in the foreseeable future.

Leaf fans get excited, Detroit fans get worried, and who benefits?  Babcock does.  On one hand, if he does want to resign with Detroit, he makes it publicly known that it might be a tough and costly negotiation for Detroit to keep him.  On the other hand, if he actually does want to come to Toronto, he makes it publicly known to the Leafs that he's still conceivably "out there" as a possibility for coaching next year, in case they otherwise might settle into some level of comfort with Carlyle.

It's probably just a rumour that started out of nothing much, but it's not inconceivable to me that Babcock somehow allowed this rumour to happen at this very specific time when Toronto-Detroit are playing a home-and-home.

So on a possession level, if you take Wilson's tenure with the Leafs (2008-09 to March 2, 2012) the Leafs' CF% over that time at 5v5 is 50.1%.  If you look at the period from when Kessel debuted (Nov. 3, 2009) until Wilson was fired, that number is 49.8%.  From when Phaneuf debuted to when he was fired, 48.8%.

From when Carlyle was hired until now, the number is 44%.

Those numbers are from war-on-ice.com btw, since they allow you to look at date ranges.
