"Trading a 1st and 2nd round pick to the New York Islanders on June 26, 2015 for Griffin Reinhart."

You just can't make deals like this (which was a horrible deal at the time) and stay competitive in the NHL. It's too hard coming back from something like that.

The Leafs made deals like that for years. Once they stopped the started to right the ship.
While the Leafs made some bad trades over the years, when they traded 1st round draft picks, they got a good player in return. Not some guy that wasn't even doing well in the AHL.

First one that comes to mind was acquiring Vesa Toskala and Mark Bell for a Leafs 1st round pick.

They would have been better not making this trade. 3 years later, they had nothing to show for that trade.
They still had an NHL player for 3 years, that turned into J.S. Gigueure and they thought he was the answer to their goalie issue.

Yeah, but that's in a way my point. Whenever these guys get fired it's not because their incompetence has been revealed, just about anyone who gets and loses a GM job will be rehired into a NHL job that dozens of other people would kill for no matter how badly they do, but rather it's meat to throw on the fire to appease the public. Nobody in Edmonton's upper management probably now thinks that Chiarelli is a "bad hockey man" or has an inability to assess hockey talent, just that his moves didn't work out for whatever reason and they want to make a change for largely cosmetic purposes.

It's like a craps table switching shooters. Nobody actually believes the new guy is somehow better at throwing dice.

Fair enough, I can see that.

Edm media is exactly the voice they deserve.

Either way, it's a mismanagement of assets. Raycroft for Rask is similar. You make a mistake with a young assets or assets, it's hard to recoup from that.

I mean comparing Chiarelli to JFJ isn't exactly great company for him.

Seems apt.  ;D

Edit: Mark Hunter is who the Oilers should hire. He'd provide exactly what they've been  sorely missing, the ability to identify and develop young talent.
How many selections did he make for us that will actually pan out? He seems to be to be highly overrated for drafting and developing talent.

This is not exactly about Edmonton, but it is something they do to an extreme amount.

It's 2019 and Brian Burke still thinks the jury is out on the Hall for Larsson trade.

Burke is so nuts.

He also sounded kinda backhanded when he was complimenting Nylander tonight. Absolutely no energy.

The drafts of 2015-2017 that Hunter was a part of, the Leafs have 3 players that have played 80 or more games which is tied for 1st with 5 other teams. The Leafs had some plum picks in those years but I give them credit for not making a flub (Marner over Hannifin).

There are some teams with 0 players in this category. Like Leafsjunkie said, the jury is still out on those drafts but the early returns are positive.

I like a lot of the other picks that were made during that time, Timashov, Grundstrom, Liljegren, Rasanen, Woll,  Ian Scott, Gordeev, whether they ever make the NHL time will tell.

Yeah, nothing's changing over there.

I mean adding character to a locker room is never a bad thing.  The problem is that character is code word for guys who lack talent but are gud pros.

Yeah his comment about Nylander "finally" having a good game.  He's been having several good games.  This is just the first time he really got rewarded for it.

What do you expect from Burke?  This is the same guy that felt the need to hold a press conference because they demoted Colton Orr to the minors.

THE RATS ARE TAKING OVER!

According to the friend of a relative of Laurence Gilman, the Oilers approaches him to gauge interest on whether the would have interest in interviewing for the position of GM. He declined.

I kind of wish Mark Spector was in their front office.

What a finely tuned machine the Oilers are.  Do they have Craig McTavish as their "cap specialist" and he's busy reading the manuals right now?
