I'm not really sure what point you're making. I'm sure Dubas is trying to sign him for less than Nylander wants but I think Nylander's ask is in line with other recent signings. Even at 8 million dollars Nylander would still be signing for a full percentage point less of the cap than Draisaitl got.

Andrew Berkshire, with the help of his fancy stats, listed the top 20 right-wingers over the last 3 seasons here:

Nylander finished 9th, Marner 8th. These rankings aren't perfect, and there's always some outliers when using a purely statistical algorithm (Laine was ranked 10... as his summary notes he doesn't do too much other than scoring, he's just really really good at that one thing). But it certainly suggests that Nylander is an elite player in the NHL. He's not getting replaced by a guy who had 10 points in 55 games coming into this season (even though I really, really do like Kapanen).

Honestly, I'd probably take both Pasta and Nylander over Draisaitl. We probably shouldn't focus so much on using Pastrnak's contract as a comparable. It's like the Scheifele contract of wingers, everyone knows it's a steal.
 
I feel certain that in the 50+ pages here I've done this before but if Nylander had scored 25 goals and had 70 points then a pretty fair argument can be made that given the context(significantly less PP time, 60 games of Matthews vs. 82 of McDavid, less ice time in general) that Nylander's season would be the more impressive one. If so, and Nylander was asking for the same cap % Draisaitl got, he'd be asking for 8.75 per give or take.

That's a pretty substantial difference.
 
Auston Matthews and John Tavares have matched or outscored every team in the league except for two teams (Carolina and Chicago).  Do we really need Nylander?  Small sample size, sure, but he's really not doing himself any favors IMO.  The Leafs just might be better off flipping him for some more defense.

They've played four teams who are, at best, middling. They've got precisely zero convincing wins. They're a long way from thinking they've got all the answers.

Who needs him? Matthews and Tavares are definitely going to keep scoring on 40% of their shots.

Flip Kapanen with Nylander and I do think we have a better set of line, since any RW with Matthews will score a ton... let Kappy build up some confidence in his game.

Can we PLEASE let Kapanen play the season on Matthews wing for the entire season so he can put up 20 goals - 40 assists and we can have a debate next season how he's worth $8m/season.  ;D

Seriously though, you need to keep the reins pulled back on Johnsson and Kapanen so we can have some decent support at a decent cap hit. Kappi gets 70 points and he's gone.

[/quote]If Kappy gets 70 points that means he's played with Matthews all year and Nylander isn't on the team anymore. If that happens so be it. Kappy will come in cheaper then Nylander.
 
If Kapanen scores 70 points I'll dance butt naked and post the video on these boards*.

* I won't actually do that but you get my point
