What if the Big 3 all get what their max projected asks are, and the cap only goes up the minimum $2M? Will the Leafs be able to still be competitive?
Yes, but we will have to shed some players. That's fine as long as they're not players from the core.
Cap casualties that wouldn't bother me: Zaitsev, Hainsey, Marleau, Leivo, Gauthier, Brown
Cap casualties that would make me cringe, but ultimately shrug off: Hyman, Gardiner, Kadri*, Johnsson, Kapanen
* Losing Kadri is sub-optimal, and is predicated on finding a suitable 3C. An alternative to directly sourcing a 3C is landing or developing a winger that brings you 85%+ of Nylander's positive affect on Matthews, and running Nylander as sheltered scoring 3C, but good luck finding that cheaper than Kadri.
