If he returns this season, I see it in the CAL game on the 01 Apr 14. But I am having doubts about him playing again this season

Could be, but I would be quite surprised if he wasn't in for the playoffs.

IMO, he is going to need 5 games to get into game shape prior to the playoffs

Yup, but he wouldn't be the first player to step back into games on playoff game 1.

I would be happy to have him on the 4th line vs. Orr or anyone else who might take that job.

I would like to see him play. But I think he has too much talent for the fourth line.

Good place to start him though.  He can PK with JayMc, log 10'ish minutes for a few games until ready to move up.

Hope_Smoke: Dreger "it's a difficult one for Bolland in terms of frustration"

Hope_Smoke: Dreger "there still seems to be some feel and strength issues around the injury"

Hope_Smoke: Dreger "until Bolland gets to a place where he feels comfortable testing it they just don't know"

Hope_Smoke: Dreger "the Leafs felt it could have been this weekend, last weekend or even immediately following the Olympic break. Still a mystery"

He's not skating/practicing with the team yet, so, he's at least a couple weeks away, and, from the sounds of it, things haven't really improved for him over the past month. I'd say he's not likely to be back for the Leafs this season unless they go deep in the playoffs.

Really sucks.  Bolland could have really helped this team.

Bolland could have really helped this team.

There's no "i" in team.

There's an "i" in Rielly.

Bolland could have Rielly help this team.

Rielly must lead this team.

I wouldn't give up hope just yet. There is some time left. He could still return for the playoffs.

The regular season ends in less than a month and Bolland hasn't appeared to have made much progress since before the Olympics. Things would have to turn around awfully quickly for him to return for the 1st round of the playoffs. If he doesn't get into a game by the end of the regular season, my guess is he doesn't get into another game as a Maple Leaf - unless he's willing to sign a super cheap 1 year deal.

I'm not holding my breath, basically what busta said.  Before the Olympics they were saying he might get into a game before the break, and things looked good, now, not so much.

I wonder if people maybe had their hopes a little too high. A bad achilles injury is one that, as far as I know, should take a year to recover from. I know people maybe got their hopes up from weird exceptions like Karlsson last year but maybe the idea of him coming back this season should have been a best case scenario possibility and we're now just seeing the other side of that coin.

I think hopes were raised because the media, coach and the player himself at one point or another talked about how he was close to returning to the line up.

Well and he was participating in practice.

He did, but, I'm not sure he actually ever completed a full practice. He also wasn't participating in practices for all that long.

Does anyone know what his actual injury is?  I've read severed tendon on the outside of his ankle, which is not the achilles.  Karlsson's was achilles and doesn't sound like a frank tear, but rather partial, unlike Bolland's which sounds like a complete rupture.  Two different injuries so who really knows.  Anyone know the details?

I doubt if he'll play this year.  Given how he wanted to sign with the Leafs/his home team, I'm hoping he might be up for a 1-year deal.  This injury will have knocked his value down on the free market - well, who really knows these days - and he may be willing to take a 1-year deal to show his worth.  I hope.

From the article:

?The final piece of the puzzle is, ?is the player ready to play, 100%??? Loiselle said in his radio interview. ?He?s got to be ready. The coach has got to make that determination after practising. Does he feel that he?s been in enough regular practices to get into a game?

?And then the player?s got to determine, ?am I 100%? Am I able to make the turns? Am I able to perform at every level???

He said a doctor would issue final clearance, after hearing from the player. The doctor, though, was not the hurdle.

Sounds to me like, yes, the doctor has said his tendon is repaired and he's thus able to participate without further injuring himself.  That doesn't mean he's "ready to play".  After such a difficult injury it takes a while to get all of your strength and quickness back.  Both he and Carlyle are a better judge of whether he's ready (conditioning/strength wise) to play an NHL game than the doctor.  I just hope he's ready to go a few games before the playoffs to help get his timing and dust the rust off.

Not that I blame him, but what is more important to Dave Bolland, the Maple Leafs playoff push, or the multi-year contract he will receive this summer? His return from injury is going to be a big determination on the latter.

I imagine the biggest concern for him is his long-term health. I'm sure he'd rather take a cheaper one year deal this summer and come into next season 100% than risk his future by coming back too soon this season.
