Franson, Kadri, Gardiner, Reimer ... still Leafs at the deadline?

It's growing more and more apparent, at least to me, that Franson is the odd man out when the dust settles on this squad. Fransons game is better suited for a team looking for more offense from the blue line. I think the Leafs have enough of that in Reilly and Gardiner. More players with Gleasons skillset are needed now to balance things out a bit more.

Dreger on #TSNDrive: #Leafs taking calls on Nikolai Kulemin.
More on Kulemin from @DarrenDreger: "This isn't going to be for a draft pick, Toronto needs a player they can insert into their lineup."
Dreger said that for a 3rd line player, Kulemin will likely be too expensive for #Leafs. #TSNDrive

Clarkson on the other hand.

If Dreger told us that the Leafs management thought the sky was blue I'd be a little skeptical about it. He's good at breaking trades when they happen but when it comes to his radio show appearances it's like he just likes to hear his own voice.

Team willing to discuss potential trades for player on expiring contract. In other news, sky is blue, water is wet, and ice is cold.

Losing Kulemin would be a huge loss to this roster.

At 5 on 5 and players with at least 30GP, Kulemin is 6th on the team in points/60 minutes.  He's 4th on the team in goals/60 minutes.

This despite being 16th on the team in terms of offensive zone start% at 36%.  He draws twice as many penalties as he takes, despite being one of the more physical players on the team.

Despite played 10 fewer games than most of the team, he is 1st on the team for blocked shots by our forwards.  He's 4th in hits.  He's 2nd on the team in PK-TOI/game behind McClement and gets absolutely no PP-TOI/game.

If the Leafs walk away from Kulemin over paying him money, this would be the second year in a row they would walk away from a very good bottom 6 players to accomodate Clarkson's bloated corpse of a contract.  You could probably fit Kulemin + Komarov for just a little more than Clarkson's awful contract and they both are more valuable than Clarkson IMO.

But hooray, we can overpay Colton a million dollars in cap space to put up no points for another season instead.

I posted it in another thread, but between 2007 to now, he's 98th in the entire NHL in 5 on 5 pts/60.

Exactly. I like Kulemin as a 2M 3rd liner. But if he's looking for more than his 3M current, best to get something for him now. He had one terrific offensive year in 2011 that's padded his multiyear stats.

$2.8 million current, and yeah, we don't want players actually worth their contracts, that would suck.

He can fill in in the top 6, and he's a hell of a checker.  He's also someone you have to pay attention to in the offensive zone.

He's worth $3mil on my Leafs team.

Funny he is good enough to make Russian Olympic roster and most probably to play with Malkin and Ovechkin on the same line, but he is apparently not good enough to make Leafs 2nd line and must go to make room for 5.25M Clarkson who has never clicked with Lups and Kadri (while Kuli has) and scored a mere 3 goals despite his PP time.

If we are trading Kulemin lets hope during the Olympics he totally clicks with OV and their management see's him as essential to have Ov-Grabo-Kuly may work very well for them.  In return we could get back Toronto born Tom Wilson (16th overall last year) and Rielly Barber.  A few on here had hoped we could draft Wilson in 2012 but we went with 2 defenceman in the early rounds which I am in no way complaining about (Reilly & Finn) but Wilson would be a nice addition from that draft.  Barber, well everyone needs a Barber!
