Man that clip still gives me chills. I don't think I've ever been as exited during a Leafs game as I was that night.

I got chills too, even a little choked up. At his peak Bob Cole is one of the best commentators I've ever heard, in any sport.

In terms of not generating shots, when the Leafs smell blood they don't bother with the low % crap.

Well done...freaking excited about some playoff hockey.

In other news: I cannot handle Bob Cole at all. The guy has no idea who has the puck, just uses the team name to call the play.

With Hughson, you know who has the puck, who is with him, and who he is up against, and then he anticipates the next play.

Cole just rambles away, making obvious statements about a play that is long over.

Don't know why most here don't like Hughson. He's light years better than Cole IMO.

I take Bob every day of the week over Hughson.  The latter may know who has the puck but his monotonous delivery is really grating over a whole game. Every goal scored scored, hit, whatever, is spoken with the exact same annoying affectation.  Bob, though not as well as h used to, is still capable of changing the tone of his delivery depending on the stage and flow of the game.  Back in the day he had an uncanny way of knowing that a goal was going to happen before it did.

For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZVEYrIgp6c

Every single one of those chances, in the mouth of Hughson, would be "Grrrrreat save by _____ ". It's boring as hell.

I fully agree that the Cole of yore called a great game...he has the best tone for hockey...and it took me quite a while to warm up to the sound of Hughsons voice...but to me, there is no contest.

My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I really get more out of the game when I know who is making the plays.

I didn't know that was Lupul on a breakaway last night until he celebrated the goal. There is a big difference watching "A Leaf" on a break as opposed to Lupul on a break in terms of excitement.

Cole just can't follow the game.  There was an instance last night where the predominantly leaf fans were booing an icing but he had no idea what was going on...he took a stab that there was a penalty ..  this happens to announcers from time to time..but it happens to Bob multiple times a game.  For instance later in the game when he thought neil reacted for absolutely no reason...while it was obviously from kessel slashing him.  A two hander no less.

I'm someone that's easily frustrated by announcers anyway though..so perhaps the mistakes grate on me more then they would most people.

I really dislike his call of the game, I didn't grow up hearing him call the games though, so I probably don't have the sentimental connection to his voice that most others do.

Unfortunately he sounds nowhere near like this anymore.  Instead he goes off on weird tangents and run-on sentences in order to go around the block and back to the original point he was trying to make.

But I don't find Hughson boring.  I think the broadcast seems good or bad based on how exciting the game itself is.  It's just window dressing for me.

I also like Hughson.

If anything, Cole and Neale(while good back in the day) came across quite biased..Jack Edwards biased. Add to the fact that Cole has lost the ability to keep up with the play and I'll take Hughson any day of the week over Bob.

I find Jim Hughson really creepy for some reason. As for Cole, I still like his voice, but it's obvious he doesn't have the chops to be the No. 1 guy anymore. He was the best of my generation for sure, though.

Right now, Chris Cuthbert, for me, is far and away the best play-by-play guy on TV. I can't believe CBC gave him the boot and he's not even the No. 1 guy on TSN either. Gord Miller isn't particularly good.

That was one of the most exciting overtimes I remember watching. It was one chance after another until the Leafs won it. Ah, memories. :)

Agree that Cuthbert is very good, and why CBC let him leave is a complete mystery.

I like Hughson fine.  Nobody matches Bob Cole at his peak, but even I can no longer defend him because he's just too far over the hill.  Last night when a shot got deflected up into the screen and he declared that Reimer had it to stop the play.  Omigod.

I'll say this, Gary Galley may be a fair bit homerish toward OTT but he's pretty solid otherwise IMO.  Compared to ... Craig Simpson, who is a nullity -- in fact completely colorless, which is not so good if you're supposed to be the color guy.

Nor I. Lets hope this team gives us some of the same.

Bowen on the radio after Lupuls goal - "Start your playoff beards now!!!!!!!!!!!"

Bowen during the final minute of play - "The remaining faithful in the crowd are all members of leaf nation and let me tell you it is well over half full!"

That gave me goosebumps. What a team we had. So crappy they just couldn't make it over the hump.

How did Wendel not get a penalty at the 49 second mark?  Geez.

After watching that entire thing, I don't think my heart can take playoffs anymore.  The chances in that OT were insane.
