Game 8 - Leafs @ Flyers - Monday Oct 24th 2011 - 19:00 EST - 4-2 Loss

I find the comparisons between Toskala, who was 30 with over 100 games NHL experience when he arrived as the presumed starter, and Gustavsson, who was 24 with zero NHL experience when he arrived to start as the backup, particularly entertaining.

:)

I think it's fair. Remember, Gus was hailed as the best goalie outside of the NHL when he signed here so it's not like he was you average rookie or something. He came with a big label... on he certainly hasn't lived up to.

You think comparing the two of them the way you are is fair? It ignores a lot of basic principles if you ask me.

Many thought the same about Pogge and he actually played the NA game at high level before coming to Toronto, Goose might need time to adjust or he might be what he is but comparing a back up with high expectations and no NA experience to a starter with oodles of it is kind of weird to me.

Best I can say is that it's two different examples of lowered expectations.

After hearing both Hedman and Strahlman proclaimed as the next Lidstrom, you should be able to temper opinions based on hyperbole coming out of Sweden.

Wasn't Brunnstrom was also getting Forsberg comparisons?

Was he?  You mean, stuff other than both of them being Swedish?

LOL TSN Icechips:

"Chris Pronger was not on the ice Monday morning, but that is a normal occurrence when the Leafs are in town. TSN "

The hyberbole about Gustavsson wasn't coming out of Sweden.

Still it's a good point, either way.

There were some Alfredsson comparisons, but I think it was mostly about being a late-bloomer.

That's it, thats what I remember.

8-6 Leafs, with an empty netter from Gustavsson to top it all off.

And 2 line brawls.

I gotta say, I really don't know how the Leafs have 5 wins right now.

The combined record for the 4 teams we have won against is 8-17-4, for a winning percentage of about .275........not very good to say the least.

This game has a similar feel to that against Boston.

5-1 Philly.  Sure hope I'm wrong.
Agreed.  I get the same feeling.

Oh good, the troll is back.
The place was getting dull.  Just got a new contract.

Well, I look forward to your thoughts after the game (if the flyers win).
To tell you the truth, the Flyers/Leafs rivalry is dead.  It's not the same as it was during the first few years I was on this board.  I'd like to see the Flyers & Leafs meet in the playoffs again.  I like our current team, they purged the bad influences, & brought in guys like Couterier & Simmonds who work hard and care.  It remains to be seen whether this new goalie is the answer; but, he is certainly an upgrade from last year, & will be a good mentor to Bob.
