Can the Leafs improve their draft position?

Identify what teams will be competing for draft position and what their need are.  If you think a team like Carolina could really use a Liles, deal him.  Maybe they make the playoffs, and you move up in the draft.  Deal for a lower pick, then deal any older player to teams even worst.  Make that pick even better.

It's ok.. they left that task to the other teams under them today... Ott, NJ and CLB all won.

The Leafs are now in 22nd place with the winning CLB BJ's only one point under them in the standings, and one game in hand.

That's good for 9th pick, and a 2.7% chance at 1st overall... possibly could increase to 8th pick soon, and a +0.9% chance at that #1 Draftee.

New Jersey wins in OT - Passes the Leafs in the standings
Florida loses in OT - 6 points back of the Leafs (1 game in hand)

Ottawa wins in SO - Passes the Leafs in the standings
Nashville loses in SO - 2 points back of the Leafs

Columbus wins - 1 point back of the Leafs (1 game in hand)

The Leafs could be in the bottom 5 of the league by the end of the month at this rate.  They are currently 21st in the league.

I see you guys are also tracking their position in the standings. I think the Leafs are damn lucky that a few teams in the Metro division started out so terribly, otherwise they would already be out of the playoff race.

Here's the updated wildcard race, with Detroit still playing tonight.

New York 49
Detroit 48
------
Ottawa 48
Carolina 47
New Jersey 47
Toronto 47
Columbus 46

The list of teams they'd have to climb over is getting pretty
large. Playoff chances not looking too good, the site I frequent has them at 14%.

Only if Detroit doesn't get a point in their game. They're currently tied midway through the 3rd.

Yeah Detroit has all but won that game, so the earliest the Leafs can get their playoff spot back is Tuesday against Boston.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager a fair some of money that it won't happen by the end of Tues.

Just a feeling.

Yeah everything that could go wrong for someone who wants them in the playoffs at this time did. I hope we get 3 pts over the next two games. But I will be realistic, I am not holding my breath either.

Maybe. That depends on how Detroit, Washington, Philly and the Rangers to in their games today. Philly and the Rangers are going head to head, so, regardless, one of them is getting 2 points, but, if the Rangers win in a 3 point game, the Leafs wouldn't be able to pass either of them Tuesday. Washington is facing Buffalo, so, they probably come out with 2 points, putting them out of reach. Detroit is facing Anaheim, so, the Leafs could get lucky there.

Well, no, I don't think the Leafs, as they're playing right now, can beat Boston. I'm just pointing out that they might not have the opportunity to get back into a playoff spot that night.

Your right on that one. Also I think this team has proved only one thing so far. They are at or near the bottom of the NHL when it comes to bringing it. They should be wearing a paper bag when they collect them big pay cheques. They IMO are one lazy bunch.

I honest think the best road road to recovery would be to tank for the 2015 NHL entry draft.

Personally, I'm not entertaining that as a reasonable expectation for the Leafs at all. The time for the Leafs to bottom out isn't now or next season, it was over the last 3-6 years.
